Arrow DIY: Engine Oil Change

As many of you would like to service your car yourself, we thought it might be helpfull to post BMW official guide to change the oil:

Engine Oil Grade - 0W30(that is what we found in BMW manuals)

Oil Filter - Part# 11427566327

Filling capacity when Oil Filter was replaced - 6.5 liters

Draining Plug tightening torque - 20Nm
Filter housing tightening torque - 25Nm

BMW Guide is attached as PDF file.

Enjoy,

Aleks.

Always change the engine oil at operatingtemperature.
That was from the manual....f that! Change oil when it is warm, to ensure all of it flows out smoothly, but not hot, so you don't burn the crap out of yourself.

My dealer used 5W30 for 1,200 service. I've also seen 0W40 listed.

In BMW Manuals they list a few options for S55. I think 0W30 for the street use is fine and 0W40 perhaps for the track days.

Either they're ripping you off or they don't know what they're doing. The new M takes standard BMW oil. The old M (e9x/e46) required special M oil. The same rule applies to US and EU. We pay $7.50/qt here in the US for standard BMW synthetic oil.

Plus, you do get free oil changes for the first 4yrs right?

I always do an oil change between BMW's recommended interval(on my dime). Even on my leased vehicles(just in case I want to keep it).

Same here, but our cars take standard synthetic oil. My dealer charge me $100. You should not use the E9x M3 oil like the other poster. Can't mix and match oil between changes. Stick with OEM viscosity and density recommendation.

Our engine will outlast the electronics of our cars. There really isn't any proof that changing the oil more frequent than 10k miles will extend the life of the engine, but it makes us feel good about it.

I've heard 25NM for the drain plug torque as well... Is that for the newer models?
