Walnut blasting not common practice here in Aus ?
Been looking into having this done and everyone I have spoken to has had nfi what im talking about, even BMW. When I called them they had to ask around alot to work out if they even offered it. They came back and said its old dated tech and they use other methods now like sprays ect. .. so how has everyone had the cleaning done here ? Thinking im just going to have to have them manually cleaned by hand. Any thoughts on what else I should look at having done while everything is opened right up in terms of maintenance items ?

I had heard a bit about Sea Foam stuff but don't spose it would clean it as good as that. So I have 75k kms on my car... when should it be done? Rough idle or as maintenance procedure. |

Thanks guy i should have specified, i already knew advan had a blaster, but im on the Gold Coast and even the local euro mobs around here aren't familiar with it.
Yes i was pretty astounded that it took BMW such effort to even work out if they offered what i assumed would be routine for our N54s and 55s... I really really need a mob in SE QLD who knows thier way around the N54 like the interstate guys have with advan ect... its such a PITA when i who is only very new to this platform seem to be more clued up about what might be required than the specialist shops do... |

From 60,000km, sea foam is a waste of time, eather pick it out by hand or use our walnut cleaning service.

I am in Adelaide and went through the same crap with the dealer. It took two weeks to even confirm they didn't do it.
I bought my own machine from via of the members in the US and took that to my local service guys that stripped the required engine parts in 20 minutes and blasted it for me. Massive difference. The one tip I would give if you do this is to get the correct grit. Walnut shells are hard to come by in that small grit and Apricot kernels are the equivalent here with the same properties. |

None the less, exactly why is Seafoam ineffective for our cars ? im curious as BMW suggested it too and i know they also have NFI, but if this is what a large % of people are getting when they book in then does it really do that much of a bad job ? and why isnt it preferred ? Cheers |

The carbon deposits that get caked up on the valves become extremely hard due to the radiant heat from the combustion chamber.
So this buildup becomes baked on the valves, thus to remove it takes much more then a mere chemical solution. It has to be physically removed by abrasive media or via hand using stiff gun brushes etc (which takes 4 x times longer doing it by hand). |

Okay sweet sounds logical. I was quoted about $700 drive in drive out to manually clean the carbon deposits by hand by a local mob who i actually like at this stage, they too know nothing of blasting but did say around that region in terms of cost. Does that sound reasonable ? Im thinking ill have my valve cover gasket replaced at the same time to save on labor as that needs doing also.

HaHa been there done that years ago, the only way to get the port/valve clean is to do it by hand, or use the walnut blasting method. THERE IS NO OTHER WAY Happy to book in your car, we can even do a before and after dyno run if you like.
