Thunderbolts Way / Oxley Hwy Drive
Hey guys I'm just seeking advice and to see if anyone is interested in a weekend drive up through thunderbolts way and the oxley?
I've always planned to do this run, and twice before had my bike ready but had to cancel due to wet weather going with a group of guys I use to ride with. Since they knew the way I was just going to tag along, but sadly never ever got around to doing it. My BMW rarely gets driven as it sits in the garage wrapped up in a cover, and it only gets driven once every few months (mainly because I've been flat out with all my spare time doing house renovations) and I really need to utilise it and blow the cobwebs out of her! So my plan is to organise a run up through thunderbolts way then down the oxley and stay in say Wauchope overnight, then go back up the oxley and down thunderbolts way the next day (miss the boring drive back on the coast road) By doing it over two days ensures it's not such a hectic long single day and provides plenty of time to stop for brunch/lunch and an overnight stop to have a meal along with a few beers and stay somewhere such as this: http://www.booking.com/hotel/au/timb...ability_target The proposed route: One of my mates recently done it with the porsche club and loved it, and all my mates with bikes also have raved about it, how smooth the roads are and just endless flowing high speed yet safe bends. So just curious guys seeking feedback from those that have done this run and let me know if you're interested. I'm shooting to do it possibly on the sat 4th Oct returning on the sunday the 5th. Cheers Shane |

Nice drive. Did thunderbolt's way once on my way back from teaching in armidale uni. Almost died on a yellow signed 25kmh 90 degree corner before a single lane bridge. Watch out for that little fucker.

Funny story with thunderbolts! A mate was driving back to Sydney from armidale at night and hit a fox, which broke his radiator and then overheated the car, he dumped it on some random farm and we drove up next day with a car trailer to pick it up. We misjudged the fuel and didn't take out chance to fill up on the freeway up from Sydney, (we had about 60%-70% tank still), by the time we needed petrol, there was non, and the 2 or so we passed closed at 7pm...at one stage, the trip computer said we had about 30kms left and we were 35kms away from walcha, we could either find a decent place to camp out for the night and call for help in morning or just make a run for Walcha and hope for the best.....I never think I drove a car so lightly, caressing the throttle over every tiny hill and then hitting neutral...we made it to walcha on fumes and then behold a bp! (Or caltex), we danced around the streets after we filled up.
Then we headed off looking for his car, which then took 2 hours, cause he couldn't remember where he left it...everywhere looks exactly the same, so we went up and down a 25km section of the road about 5 times...until we finally found it. It was also freezing and the car had icy frost all over and I was severely underdressed. Took us another hour to get the car back onto the trailer (he parked it a bit far from the road, as to not try and get too much unwanted attention). Anyway, morale of the story, 1) watch out for foxes 2) get plenty of petrol when you can 3) it's freaking cold out there 4) if you break down, don't forget where you left the car Having said all that, I am soooooo keen! Give me a time and I will be there |
