Why does my 335i turbo sound like a supercharger?

Hey Folks,

My 335i turbo sounds like a supercharger, by that I mean it sort of makes a whistling sound than a traditional throaty turbo. My car was in the body shop and I had a rental 328i for a month, the turbo on the 328 actually sounds better than mine IMHO, it sounds like a motorcycle when I push it above 5000 rpm, like I can hear the engine making larger explosions. My 335i makes a whistle/whine which starts just above 2000 RPM, its not a loud whistle, but it does not sound like the 328i.

Is something wrong?

Unless your check engine light is on and there's some noticeable change in power nothing is wrong.

The 328i is a different engine. It's like saying your car doesn't sound like a GT-R or RX7. You have 2 fewer cylinders and a different exhaust system. The noise is a function of the recirculation, intake, and exhaust design which is unique on each engine.

If you hear the engine making "larger explosions" either that's a really weird way of describing your engine noise, unless of course you were getting detonation/knock in which case I would check your gas.

Are you sure you didn't get the optional Supercharger package? How is the sound? Is it more like a "ssssWWWWBBrrrrrrrrrrrSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSWWEEEEEEE EE" or like a "VRRRRsssssssshhhhhhsppppppssssssssssssssshhhh hh"?

I know 328 has a different engine than a 335 but my point was that my car sounds like it has a supercharger, not a turbo charger. - they both sound distinctively different. If the term "explosion" sounds weird to you, I guess it was definitely a really weird way of explaining it.

Ha, I am sure I didn't buy a supercharger. I checked under the hood just to make sure . Its definitely sounds like a "ssssWWWWBBrrrrrrrrrrrSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSWWEEEEEEE EE".

Can you be more specific to the type of supercharger it sounds like? Positive displacement such as a roots or twin-screw? Or is it more of the centrifugal type?

It's okay, my Honda sounds like a diesel sometimes and it isn't one. It goes "woaaarr-click-woaaarr-click-woaaarr-click", but like really fast and at the same time.
