K&N vs. BMC air Fliters

So which one is best and not because of the price?

BMC Flat Panel Replacement Air Filter for $195.00

or

K&N Performance F8X M3/M4 Replacement Air Filter for $99

Which one would make the car breathe better giving that 1 extra horsepowers??

I would not use an oiled filter of any kind in this car. Oil tends to contaminate MAFs and with the super fast turbo rotation speeds the last thing we need is oil mist hitting the compressor blades.

I would not bother with a drop in filter for a minimum gains if any actually, and prefer to spend money elsewhere like downpipes and bms tune.

If money is not issue and it is not since you have an m4, then BMC it is.

Btw k&n is $175 and bmc $195

It's new car mod bug syndrome, and the retailers rejoice. Just pull the charcoal emissions part out of it if anything. It's a PITA to replace in any case, and you get free BMW maintenance. If you do get a sensor failure and they see an aftermarket filter no coverage.

Wouldn't call it that, the filters will become much more beneficial once performance mods/tunes are released. On a stock platform, there's not too much that can be gained - but you can hear the turbos slightly after installation.

Nothing wrong with getting a head start.

We're using the BMC filters. As for differences, the BMC filters have a much better build quality than K&N, specially on wicking (where filter media meets poly gasket).

Here's a DIY we posted which should give a good overview of the install and closeup of the filters:

if your car does not have good airflow the rest is limited. Its one of the quietest/cost effective ways to improve flow ( much cheaper than a new intake) . I have had both K&N and BMC both are great.

The oil can be a problem so buy the filter cleaning kit from k&n and use the cleaner and if you want you can very lightly re-oil. I have never had an issue flowing these steps.

BMC v K&N; Its usually a matter of ones personal preferences and price. I had a K&N in my old e92 M3 and an BMC in my 997.2 Carrera and never had a problem with any.

Using an oiled filter is never an issue if the filter is not oiled excessively. More oil is not better here as some vehicle owners found out the hard way.

Does charcoal filter delete void warranty? Is it something they will look for at my 1200 mile check up?
