Question about tires re drag strip/autox

I am interested in breaking 12.5 at the drag strip. My best so far with stock wheels/tires and Procede 1.47 is 12.889. When the track opens again next year, I'll have a Procede v.2, catted DPs, BMC air filter, and I just received two Kosei's with Nitto 555rs, which are drag radials. They are not totally slick, but have some tread. I still may get two more for the front, but instead of putting on a drag radial, I am considering using an autox type high performance tire, like a Hoosier, because I also plan to run autox events. Anyhow, my question is do you think I can get by using the Nittos on the back and something else on the front for auto x racing, or do you think I need completely different, nondrag radial tires on the rear?

I think I already know the answer, but am just trying to save money rather than having another set of wheels/tires. I believe I could use autox tires up front for the drag racing, and then switch out the back wheels and tires for autox racing. That means 6 wheels and tires, but still better than 8 sitting in my garage.

Tx.

Drag tires have no lateral stability.

Right, I wonder how important that is for the rear tires though, in contrast to the front tires.

Very important. A squirmy rear end makes for unpredictable handling.

I've given up trying to make my tires do double-duty (with Kumho Ecsta V710's)... now just got BFG Drag Radials for drag racing application.

A good R compound will be acceptable for double duty. You definitely don't want to go the other way, and take the drag radials to the auto-x.

The R comps will provide good grip upon the launch at the strip, much better than street tires. They could be enough for your 12.5.
