"Y" USB-Audio cable for the M4?

I remember there was a "Y" shaped USB and Audio cable for connecting the iPhone 5/5s, but don't know exactly what they are for?
My iPhone streams music via bluetooth to the car stereo system, so what else I can do if I buy that cable?
Can someone explain what it does and if its worth it?

Normal Apple white cable works via USB socket under armrest, no need for Y cable.

It seems everyone on the boards uses the regular ol' lighting cable. I happen to have the newest BMW Lightning Y cable and I'll test it out when I get my car. I don't really think it's going to unlock any extra features like the old 30 Pin Y cable did. Ah the good old days...

I have the E9x Y cable, it appears to not work in this car, though I am using both the USB and aux in like the E9x. Maybe I'll try just the USB. If not I guess I'll just get a lightning cable for the car.

Y cable is old technology. My 2010 E92 M3 came with the Y cable, but when my wife got her X5 in 2012 we were told the Y cable was no longer needed. She connects her ipod with the Apple USB and has all functionality.

Yep. Once the comboxes came out "Y" cable pretty much not needed. They still use them in the Mini's though, and I think low model X3's.

Sucks i have to spend more money on them, but I guess it's easier this way to use the lightning.
