Anyone replaced RFT's with conventional tyres?

The tyres on my E92 325i are getting close to replacement time. I haven't been a huge fan of the RFT's as the ride is quite harsh and am seriously considering conventional tyres. I don't care about having to get a puncture kit. Has anyone done this, and does it improve the ride/handling?

I have conventional tyres which seem to be much comfier then RFTs.

However i don't have a puncture kit, which is abit of a risk. Can you recommend anything?

Garage List
2007 BMW 335i  [10.00]
I bought my car used, and it came regular tyres, small air compressor (12v accessory powered), a "Slime" puncture repair bottle... I don't think I have a jack though.

But seriously, who is going to repair a tyre on the roadside? I'm not going to be doing it in my work slacks and shirt. Bugger that, I'll just call in to work and tell them I'm not coming.

Just get RACV total care - $200/annum, and they'll tow you all the way home regardless of whoever's car you're in.

I choose to do it myself because it inconvenient me less. if i repair the tyre then im good to drive it until i have to replace it. and im talking about the tyre concrete not the slime repair kit. theyre two different things. it takes me 5mins to repair a tyre as oppose to waiting on the side of the road for an hr

I think you might find most on here have replaced their RFTs with conventional tyres. I have; and my experience is a much improved ride (smoother and quieter) and rubber of far better quality. Your range of choice is also considerably wider than staying with RFTs. I went for Michelin Pilot Super Sports and I will never look back. My repair kit is the genuine BMW Mobility kit which fits nicely into the side pocket in the boot.

What are the Michelin pilot super sports and equivalents worth roughly in Au? Would love to ditch the RFTs

Cheers

Michelin Super Sports best tyre for the 335 excellent grip on corners but very expensive here I was quoted $900 each for 255/30/19 back tyre
Tire rack is $263 at the moment.

$640 ish for 4 tyres is a shitload of money for shipping, its only worth while because of that $900 each tag here in Aust!

I don't think its $640 for 4 tyres last time it was below $400 for shipping of 4 tyres.

If u look shop around, there are places in OZ selling PSS for around the same price as tirerack are selling (when u add shipping and duty).

http://www.tyretrader.com.au/micheli...9&sort=pd.name
I have dealt with them before. Good service and speedy shipping. Works out cheaper than tireracks for me after I claim the GST back if ur car is under a company. I think if u are local, they will probably throw installation in for u. I'm brissy so have to pay extra to get my local shop to fit it and also shipping. Even then, it is slightly cheaper but only very slightly but you avoid the hassle. Tempt tyres are also good for people in SYD.

Just do a search on ebay... Might be worth looking into.

For those of you who have change to non RFT's, just wondering if Idrive throws any errors. Does any 'coding' need to be done for this?

Cheers

No ... you don't have to do a thing! Just reset iDrive as you would do whenever you inflate your tyres.

For what it is worth, I bought my Michelin PSSs from TireRack. And the cost breakdown for a set of 4 (stock 335i sizes) at the time in AU$ was:

Tyres: 1,095
Shipping: 320
Duty+GST+Customs fee: 242
Total: 1,656

Sure, I could have split the order to save on the duties but the additional shipping costs cancelled that out. You need to do your sums based on current exchange rate and TireRack prices. Then compare with the best you can do locally.

This is how I worked it out for my e90 18" tires. Don't shoot me if im wrong...
Locally in SYD
225/40/18 $549 pair
255/35/18 $749 pair
$1298 fitted if u are in SYD and 10% less gst if company car

Current price on tire rack based on 0.93 exchange rate
225/40/18 $400 pair
255/35/18 $485 pair
$885 + ~$405 shipping + ~$250 gst&duty + $80 fitting = $1615

I had import direct from tirerack in 2010-12 close to 10 sets of tires for my friend and family. Then I found a few shops that are importing themselves which are even cheaper. Maybe worth while for those who imported before like I did to compare as well. Sometime u can find bargin online like what I just did and sometime it is cheaper via tirerack.

I went the other way, I bought a 323 M sport and when the tyres wore out on the rear, I fitted Bridgestone Potenza Run Flats and they were great, the latest generation of Run Flat tyres seem to have corrected most of the old problems, I then fitted them on the front and the handling picked up markedly. Remember that these cars were engineered around these tyres. I live in country NSW were the roads are not that good and the car handled the bumps as it should.
PS; I have since traded the 323 on a E92 3351 and it's on run flats.
