BMW M4 Car and Driver Lightning Lap times are out

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
The M4 got 3:00.X lap time at VIR (Virginia International Raceway) in the 8th edition of the C&D Lightning Lap.

To put in context this is ~5 seconds faster than the e92 M3. However the base corvette stingray got 2:53 so significantly faster. The Z/28 got 2:50 I believe which is about what the GTR Nismo got. Porsche 918 set the all time record at 2:43.

Great showing for the M4 vs the E92. The spread with the C7 doesn't surprise me at all... it is a track monster. I've said it many times, the F8X are amazing dual purpose cars that blend very capable track performance with daily luxury/livability... maybe better than anyone else. However, the C7 Stingray is much more purpose built and focused on pure performance. It is a stellar car and next to impossible to beat for performance for anywhere near its price.

Gotta love the Z28 and props to GM for building a real track car!! Putting up GTR numbers in a big, heavy package is impressive!

GM is putting some serious cash into R&D and it's showing.

M4 is right where it should be.

That 918 time is serious business now. Wow.

I don't think it will end badly... the M4 did really well IMO... well enough that owners should be happy and well enough the negative nancies have nothing really to complain about.

Wait, what am I saying... of course this will end badly, I was in my imaginary happy place when I wrote the comment above and just woke up to reality

really happy with the M4 results and so cool to see that it was faster than the Cayman S and F-type R. I would of loved for them to trow a C63, RS5 and the new lexus RC-F in there to see how they stack up.

On another note the Stingray is no joke. It got a faster time than a R8 V10 plus! Congrats to GM and I can't wait to see how awesome the new Z06 will be. I actually have a deposit on it.

The work done at VIR was repaving and widening to make it a faster track, so times this year may not be comparable to prior years.

According to this thread on a Corvette forum, the faster cars at a NASA event were running about 2 seconds quicker per lap than in prior years.

The most significant takeaway from these times should be that the tire compound makes all the difference.

Tires are important but I think saying "tire compound makes all the difference" might be a slight overstatement.

Re: Z28, the Carbon brakes and the suspension. This is more of a race car than a street machine.

This. Add tire compounds and we're beyond an apples & oranges scenario.
Grain of salt folks.

GM: It's trying and delivering fast performance cars, but it also like to recall them...often.

Tires on the Z are $600 a pop! Believe I read the fronts are the widest currently being used on a production car, excluding SUVs and trucks.

You can say that about almost everything Regardless, there is no doubt the F8X is meaningfully faster.

You have to admit though that it would be nice to see a test with all the cars running the same tire compound. Like all Michelin PSSs or PZero Corsa Trofeos

Of course it's faster, but let's be realistic: A five second difference on a 4.1 mile road course is nice, but wouldn't "that difference" translate into something close to 20 seconds quicker lapping the Ring?

Not really. I think the M4 did amazing considering its 300 utg street tire. The camaro for example comes from factory with a 60 utg r compound tire.

Stingray was very quick.

Nearly 4 seconds quicker than a R8 V10 plus. Impressive to say the least.

You might want to state the track has been repaved recently in your original post.

C&D didn't really make that a point in their article and in fact often compared these cars to times of the past. I get what you're saying but I'm just the messenger not the interpreter
