BRAKE PADS

Hi All,

After wearing my brake pads following a track day in Melbourne last weekend, I'm due for new brake pads.

Hence, what are your thoughts: BMW OEM vs Hawk Performance vs Cool Carbon???

I'm looking for pads that will last the test of time and also reduce stopping distance.

Cheers,

Nash

If you're getting bendix keep your eye out in the SCA repco catalogues. I bought a set of bendix pads for my daily basher (2000 magna) and it was a buy the front set and get a rear set free sale!

How do the Bendix pads compare to BMW OEM, Hawk and Cool Carbon?

Btw, my budget is $150-200 per brake pad set.

What do you want from your pads? Street with the occasional track day?

Do you want a quite cheap pad with minimal dust? Or is pedal feel and baking power more important than a quite pad with minimal rotor wear?

I have recently purchased some stop tech street performance pads that i will be using for my m3 brake conversion based on good reviews on the m3 forum and they were really cheap!

I was after a pad which is quite with minimal rotor wear that ultimately spends 99.9% of its time on public rd's.

FWIW these are the pads stoptech bundle with their BBK's.

Street with the occasional track day.

As mentioned, I want brake pads that will last long as well as reduce stopping distance.

Interestingly, a lot of people end up going with the standard BMW Genuine brake pads even after considering Cool Carbon and Hawk.

The oem pad is generally going to provide a smooth quite well wearing pad operating at low speeds and a good all rounder.

OEM pads are made by aftermarket suppliers (ATE, textar, pagid, jurid etc) and are just boxed up with bmw packaging basically (you can save yourself a lot of money by buying the ATE etc branded pads to suit your application)

From what you have said you're happy with the oem pads?

The trouble is when stepping up to a more aggressive pad, they're quite often noisy, only start working with some heat in them (take 10 mins or so of driving to start becoming effective) and eat brake rotors... It's a a catch 22 situation at times

Go into your service menu, which is done by holding the idrive button down for 3 seconds as soon as you start up the car from the main screen.

I ended up going with Genuine BMW Brake Pads. Thought I'd play it safe. Also ended up buying new Genuine BMW rotors which burnt even more $$$.

All up it's gonna cost me $800 for Genuine BMW rotors + pads, and another $270 for labour.

That's track days for you, BMW ones have softer rotors, or so I heard, they will wear out quicker but have better braking, if your going to continue doing track days then I recommend getting something aftermarket, which will also be a lot cheaper. And YouTube how to change rotors and pads

Hard to beat the BMW OEM pads and rotors. They are soft and dust up badly but for everyday performance BMW E46/90 brakes are hard to beat.

There were a lot of OEM options but I just ended up going with the Genuine BMW products as I was able to source them for a decent price. Probably would've only saved $200 if I chose OEM over Genuine BMW pads plus rotors.
