Adaptive M Suspension
If you don't have this option (I don't) what setting is your car in default? Comfort, sport, or sport +?
My ride feels quite stiff, so I doubt it's comfort. At $900.00 CAD, I highly recommend this option. |

Is it unbearably stiff? I am leaning towards not optioning the Adaptive M Suspension when I order. The reason being I don't see my self toggling every time between the different modes. I have only test driven the M3 with the Adaptive M Suspension and am curious as to how stiff the Passive Suspension is.
In comparison I have an '07 335i Sport package, staggered fitament, I find the suspension is great. |

Drove a passive w 18s. Felt perfect to me but I am sure the wheel size/tire wall makes a massive difference.

I have the passive and drove it through Germany, Italy, Switzerland and Austria including old cobble stone roads etc. never felt too stiff but it's also not too soft for the street. I have the 19s. Keep in mind suspension comfort is highly subjective and I've never driven a stock street car suspension I found to stiff but countless that are too soft. BMW M are IMO masters of tuning suspension to be both supportive and compliant. I also don't like "modes" for suspension, steering and throttle. For the DCT I like the settings though ( I got 6 MT this time though ). Luckily the M3 is setup from default with my preferred settings so no butting pushing needed.

I do not really believe you can say its compared to any setting, simpel because its different in every way. I find all settings almost the same "stiffness", it just compensates more in sport+ to keep the car as level as possible. That is why I like it so much!

I use Sport+ for daily driving and Comfort for highway commute. Well worth what I paid for the option.

I think for what you get, there is no better way to spend $1000 on options that the Adaptive suspension. The LED lights cost twice that, and that's mainly cosmetic.

After my ED and cobblestone roads I would say it's totally necessary. Comfort also makes the highway a breeze, though turning at 135mph definitely feels better in sport + . I live in NY and the roads are crap so the cobblestone streets gave me a good taste of how much I want the comfort mode.

My F80 default starts in Sport. And both my M settings use Sport as well. When it gets bumpy, it's nice to have the Comfort option readily at hand.

That is exactly what I have and I think it is great. I do not find it too stiff at all. Of course I am coming from an Dinan E46 M3, so maybe don't know what isn't stiff

Same here passive and 6 MT. Had passive on my E90 M3 as well. Have I ever wished I had adaptive? No. Do I know better ways to spend $1k for me, you bet.

I had a coffee related accident that got Peter into comfort once, and I was for a moment sure my car was breaking down. Not my best few seconds, but after that he has never been driven again on it.

The fixed is firm, predictable and ready for action at any moment. I think people should check it out before adding another layer of electronic interference between car and road. Especially good with 18s. I just don't think it should be summarily discounted.

I think that there is a major problem with people's perception of what the Adaptive Suspension actually does. Yes, there are three settings, but that is not the real story.
You are getting a suspension that is continuously updating its dampening settings many times per second to adapt to the surface, speed, and forces in which you are driving. Yes, if you are going to throw it all out and buy some third party products you should skip it. But don't labor over whether you need a button to choose between three settings. That's not all you are getting. |
