100 Octane

With all of the modern electronics in this engine is it safe, recommended, or noticeable, to put 100 octane, or mix in some 100oct at the pump?

If you had a custom map it might be worth it.

I was always under the opinion that it did more in a high compression engine if it didn't have a tune. taking a long coastal drive this afternoon and can't hurt to find out

I suggest getting the JB4. I think you will enjoy it, especially if your looking to run 100 oct or better numbers.

Put 100 octane in the car for only half a tank as it is offered at most gas stations in Germany. No performance difference unless you are psychologically influenced easily or have a butt dyno deficit disorder.

Probably more like 94.

98 RON would equate to 93 AKI

Totally safe and actually will prevent knocking under spirited conditions and increase power slightly. As the E92 the stock DME limits timing, so anything past 97 octane will not be beneficial. A 5 gallon pale should in half a tank is enough 100 to boost your 91 to an optimal octane mix. It'll save you some cash.

But with a tune. Thats another story

There is no enforcement of octane at the pump in the US, so if you are tracking your car putting one gallon of 100 octane in the tank to guarantee your fuel is really 93 will help. As the engine gets hot there is more tendency to knock and for the computer to pull timing, reducing power.

Have not tried it in my M3 (still in the break-in period), but I have datalogs showing this is beneficial in my 2006 LS2 Corvette.

Good point as octane decreases steadily over time.

I don't know where you got this from but the ///3s in Australia has a sticker on the fuel flap to say it recommends RON 98. In fact the owner's manual reads as follows:

Your BMW M3 engine is rated to run on:
Super Plus/premium plus fuel, octane number RON 98
Fill up with fuel of this grade whenever possible, so that the nominal performance and fuel consumption values are achieved

The minimum possible grade is:
Premium-grade unleaded fuel, Octane number RON 95
This fuel is also sold under the following designations:
DIN EN 228 or eurosuper

This is a misunderstanding related to the differing octane rating systems (RON vs AKI).

Correct I'm referring to 100 AKI. Tracking my ESS-585 E92, I always poured at least 5 gallons of race fuel as a precaution. I've seen first hand instances of poor fuel (93 to be specific) causing blown motors on track! Better safe than sorry.
