Akrapovic Evolution Exhaust for F80 M3 / F82 M4 - Weights, Dyno, Impressions, Video

Having home-court advantage to Akrapovic's facilities, we work very closely with the company and were able to provide installation and collect some data on the new Evolution systems on the F8X M3/M4 platforms. Akrapovic's newly-acquired M4 was just completed from getting wrapped and needed a system installed right away.



Akrapovic released just a handful of systems on late last week. With EAS being an authorized Akrapovic dealer since their introduction to the US, we were able to get one of the first systems for our M4 as well as installing the system on Akrapovic's own M4.

We'll be installing the following items in this thread:

- Akrapovic Evolution Exhaust System w/ carbon fiber tips
- Akrapovic Carbon Rear Diffuser

Akrapovic Evolution Exhaust

As expected from Akrapovic, the systems are very high quality and constructed from full titanium. Everything needed is included with the Evolution systems for a bolt on installation. For those utilizing the Slip-On systems, the OEM exhaust is cut and installed with the provided clamps.











Valvetronic

Electronic Bypass valves are retained from the stock exhaust system on the Akrapovic silencer.



Optional Carbon Fiber/Titanium Exhaust Tips

There are two options of exhaust tips: Carbon Fiber/Titanium or Full Titanium. For this install, we will be installing the hybrid Carbon Fiber/Titanium Tips.









Akrapovic Diffuser

Relatively new for the BMW scene, Akrapovic has been manufacturing carbon for some time now of other platforms such as the GT3 and Ferrari lines. The quality on this piece is no different. With a matte finish, this is a beautiful piece with exceptional quality, matching the tips nicely.







Weights

BMW has taken a much different approach with the 5th Generation of the M3 (and M4) models concentrating on vehicle weight.

OEM Exhaust Weights
Full System: 69lbs

Akrapovic Exhaust Weights
Slip-On Section/Silencer: 29.5lbs
Connecting Pipe: 14.0lbs

Combined Weight: 43.5lbs (25.5lb weight savings over OEM)

Exhaust Note

The sound has a very throaty exhaust note, very exotic while retaining the S55's signature sound. When mashing on the throttle, it seems to come alive ready to punch on anything in its way. Not overbearing, yet aggressive in nature.

Installation

As come to expect, installation is a breeze. All hardware is provided and all mounts/brackets line up
perfectly with the factory mounts. Below is a pictorial overview of the install:

Dyno Results

Being a prime opportunity for dyno data, we were able to get a baseline and after result with the system installed. With a peak gain of 7whp on 91 octane, this can mean a couple of things: 1) The BMW factory exhaust is very efficient, or 2) The choke point (likely) is further up at the downpipes.

We will be installing Downpipes and the Akrapovic Evolution on our shop M4 to compare results soon.











Completed Installation

Installation is about an hour on the exhaust, the diffuser is literally minutes to install. Once completed, we are greeted with a very aggressive appearance and exhaust note. A set of 15mm/12mm Macht Schnell spacers were also installed to match the stance with the exhaust.

























Hope you enjoyed the experience as much as we did. We'll be installing system #2 shortly on our Austin Yellow M4 w/ Downpipes and following up with comparative results.

Figured it wouldnt work, Not in a market for exhaust yet howeve like the CF tips perhaps in due time.

To think Akrapovic started as a small manufacturer of sportbike exhausts (then called Scorpion) and where there are now in a short time is impressive.

Isn't this to be expected? Any plans for Akra to address the downpipes? I am a huge Akra fan and love the looks of this thing, work of art. One of the justifications for paying so much for the E9x Evo was the gains (in addition to the weight savings.) With the gains so small here and the good M performance exhaust sound, I don't see why somebody would go this direction.

Yeah I agree. The OEM M perf looks way better.

This system is amazing I have to admit. But it is like $970 per whp :P
