DCT Malfunction on track

So during 2nd session of the 2nd day in HPDE3 with NASA @ VIR, my car suffered a DCT malfunction. Car went into limp mode (luckily i did not get rear-ended, cause i was dicing with a few cars) and was shuddering quite a bit, but i think it was the limp mode rev limiter. The screen displayed "DCT Malfunction".

Came back to pits, waited 30 minutes, turned it back on, no signs of any errors. No CEL, no codes, nothing. Seems to run ok.

Must have overheated.

That much for the "most track ready M3 yet".

That stinks! Too late to trade in for a 6MT?

Have you changed the "lifetime" trans fluid yet?

That sucks... I have not ever had an issue with a DCT car at the track and this might be one of the first ones reported. I would have BMW look at it in case it is specific to your car.

That sucks

Hopefully it is only an electronic gremlin.

The DCT on my E92 has been almost flawless for 100+ track days over 6 seasons. It sometimes became sluggish when I shifted continuously at 8600rpm. One lap of shifting below 8000rpm brought it back. High engine RPM seemed to put a lot heat in the tranny. I never had a warning or malfunction though.

With the lower RPM of the S55, I did not expect any issues. Time will tell.

Please keep us posted.

Keep an eye on the DCT pan. Mine ended up warping and leaking on my e92. They blamed it on overheating.

When you say "no codes", what program have you used to check? There are virtually none around yet that read the proprietry codes on the F80/82, and if you have one I'd like to know!

I am willing to bet that the BMW computer system will be able to pull a code from the car.

Hope you get it sorted.

There were no visible codes via bt1 scanner.

Yesterday, Dan @ BPC scanned it with newest ISTA (bmw diagnostic software/hardware) and there were no DCT related codes/events.

But, we did find a high pressure fuel pump one in DME. Low rail pressure. Ill start a separate thread about it, long story short bmw dealer is replacing my hp fuel pump under warranty.

I was also told there are 2 hp fuel pumps in the country, luckily i snagged one of them.

I was going to come and say hi and was looking forward to the last run on Sunday but noticed you were gone.

Never had an issue with the DCT on my E90 and works like a champ. I'd toy with it again in event it runs ok to work out any teething problems I guess.

How was the car doing otherwise? Were you able to get baseline lap times?

I was in the silver E90 M3 (and switching between a black C2S) in HPDE4

Cheers,

Lutfy

Car was great. Open passing anywhere on track without point-by was amazing. Majority of my lap times were in 2:13 - 2:16 range, depending on traffic. Few clear laps I got were high 2:12s.

Don't recall seeing Silver E90 out there Saturday, that is prolly cause you were in HPDE4 and I was in HPDE3. On Sunday, when 3 and 4 got combined, you were running C2S? Don't think I saw that either. Must have been on similar pace and never ran into each other.

Not bad! An instructor from the BMW Performance Center did a 2:09 at the Grassroots Motorsports Ultimate Track Car Challenge. Got to figure you'd be a second or two faster if it wasn't your car

I never ran in 3, left Sunday around five because everyone was packed and I didnt see your car parked at the spot you were before. I was toying with a Black E46 earlier in the AM (with C2S) who said he would be in your group (went from 4 to 3). Would have joined but with 2 students in 1 and 2, didnt want back to back. I need to edit my video for both cars (e90 and the C2S), will post. Pleased with both of them actually.

2:12 is a decent time for this car! Grip was intermittent after someone threw oil all over the esses

Performance Center BMW M4 was at Road ATL last month. He would clearly pull away at the straight by 8 car's length on me. CRAZY torque... I am going to get one eventually.

Keep us posted with what goes on with your car, I intend to get mine next year.

Ah, that's Mike. Him and I were gonna run together that day, but did not work out due to my car issues. He just posted this video, not sure if you can see this:

I am happy with 2:12s. It still feels rather unsafe to be reaching 150mph at the end of the back straight with just seatbelt and not seats/harnesses/cage. If the car had more safety equipment, I'd push it further.

Grassroots motorsports track challenge had 2015 M4 from BMW Perf Center (as you can see above in this thread). They turned 2:09s. Glad to know I am only 3 seconds off some "hired guns".

Similar thing happened to the DCT in my Z435. It became extremely sluggish towards the end of an open lapping session at Buttonwillow and if left in "S" mode it would upshift at 4500rpm

OP, are you planning to change out the gear oil?

Probably not, especially if boost leak issue turns out to be the answer to my power problems, and possibly caused DCT overheat. If it ever happens again, especially on the street, then it's a diff story.

It happened once on my E90 M3 on the street after 30 min or so hard driving ( high rpms ) where the DCT started misbehaving and the area in front of the shifter on the driver side got very, very hot to the touch. No errors though and when I slowed down it cooled off and I never had this issue again. I thought it might have been a temporary lubrication issue.

Not necessarily, the engine output torque could also play a critical role. With the S55 generating almost 40% more torque, who knows

Interesting to see how this pans out as more F8x are being tracked.

The reason I think the DCT overheating issue on my E92 is RPM related is because I never had an issue until I got a tune that increased the rev limit to 8600rpm. Further, when I did get the DCT to become sluggish, one lap of shifting below 8000rpm brought the transmission back to normal operation. I am guessing the oil pump that drive the servos in the DCT is driven directly off the crank output, hence high engine RPM will put a lot of heat in the transmission fluid.

On my first and only 3 day event thus far with the F82, the DCT performed flawlessly.

the extra torque could cause it to be a bit warner then in the e9x right?
