silent "recall". This is one of them. There are two right now.

EDIT: as pointed out by another forum member. This is not a full on recall. My understanding of a silent recall is one where the customers do not have to be made aware of the situation. The dealership quietly fixes it the next time vehicle is in for service. That usually means the issue is nothing major. I wanted to clarify this point.

It is not a recall. It is a service bulletin. There is a big difference.

Water drainage - apparently applying sealant to an area that could leak.

CAN bus, or Controller area network. It's a protocol used mainly in the automotive industry and audio. It's used for control boards and systems to communicate. It's a linear bus topology and needs to be terminated to work correctly. Lack of proper terminal in a linear bus can lead to all sorts of errors. But, I'm sure there are more then one CAN bus within M4, and I'm sure it's not a critical one, however, all CAN buses need to be properly terminated.

Not a bad write up on CAN bus protocol for those interested. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CAN_bus

Since it says retrofit resister, that means either the value is off a bit leading to internal reflections on the bus, or the value of the resister isn't up to spec in tolerance maybe a 5% resister was used instead of 1% or, maybe the resistor wasn't automotive grade quality. Most circuitry in an automobile has a tolerance of -40C to 250C. My gut tells me it's along those lines hence the retro fit.

But being a BMW, this resister isn't a simple ceramic, it's most likely SMD (surface mount and you can't be just replaced) hence in reality, they'll yank the board that part of the termination and replace it (probably a 100.00 board for a .5 cent resister). Now some CAN buses are terminated with a simple RJ45 terminated internally and used for this purpose, really depends on how it's done. I have my money on a simple little board swap (BMW isn't going to use RJ45 connectors for CAN bus termination - that's for little shops with no money)

Right after these two service bulletins were done (1200 mile Svc) I got the Drivetrain Malfunction indication which I outlined in the Drivetrain Malfunction Thread that has put my M4 out of service from Sept 29 until the parts arrive from Germany on 15 Oct at the earliest.

I hope this is a coincidence but thought I'd share my experience.

Interesting, Now the drive train system would communicate to another system of its status over a CAN bus. If somehow that protocol got messed up (say one wrong bit from 0 to a 1) it it would indicate an problem but in reality there is no problem. I'm just speculating not saying that's what happened. Point is, all communications in todays auto's use CAN bus as the primary protocol for system communication. So if you have one 1 bit out of sync and you'll get messages that are not accurate. And an improperly terminated bus (CAN, RS232, RS485, USB etc) will easily do that; SOB to track down these types of problems too from an engineering prospective.

Just went in for my break-in service and had the CAN terminator show up as a bulletin. They didn't have the part so they have to bring me back in. Might want to call to make sure they have the part if you're bringing it in for service and want to get everything in one go.

i just returned from the dealer after having a 6mos check up completed. my m4 is subjected to this open campaign and will have the part replaced when it comes in. i was surprised really as the car runs beautifully and would not have known there was any issue whatsoever.
