The courage tipped over today at the port in Jersey City causing damage over 300 cars

The Courage tipped today at the port in Jersey City causing major damage to over 300 BMWs not including 70+ BMWs that were total losses.

a majority of the destroyed vehicles were M3s (mostly in dark blue) with a variety of 3ers and 1ers smashed up as well. A small number of the cars destroyed had German Tourist plates on them, those European delivery customers will NOT be getting their cars back.

If you were expecting your M3 or e90/92 in the next month, you're going to be in for a sad surprise.

those cars that were a total loss will be crushed, I asked a BMW rep, he stated that they will not be auctioned as there is a liability for letting those cars on the road. The shipping company's insurance is footing the bill, I do not know how they will handle those cars that are already owned by the European Delivery customers.

Those cars with light damage will be repaired at the Elizabeth Receiving facility and sold through BMW's dealer network as new cars.

OMG!!!!!

The Devil does exist!
Noone in the US was expecting cars this early, so I wonder where the M3's were going. Canada perhaps?

I think it is crap BMW would fix the cars then sell them as new. Not cool..

Lucid, lay the blame now...guess we shouldn't have joked about it.

If this is true (I'm in denial, say it ain't so!) those may have been dealer demo cars.

A serious setback for the M3's launch in the states! This is horrible.....

My dealer said he wasn't getting a demo. Might be selling the spot.
Also, why would the demo cars be in IB? I would expect them to be in AW or some other more popular color.

didn't somebody just joke about this happening? Glad my allocation is not till May/June 08! But that may be pushed back if BMW-NA has to replace wrecked cars!

Ah...no more joking around guys! Somebody upstairs was/is listening!

If people get pushed back, this will effectivly be Hell on Earth.
However, like I said, noone was expecting their car this early in the US. The earliest people's cars are just now going into production.

Then I'd say you just say alot of dealer demos and launch cars in that article/picture then! They will have to be replaced somewhow and that may push back future allocations you'd think?

U just lost a good amt of the US supply...the demand is still the same so I'd assume BMW would need to adjust the supply a little due to this unfortunate accident!

Does anyone think this would affect my car? It went to status 151 today, meaning it finished being painted.

How can they be sending so many cars if they don't even have a price? People are just buying?

Demo cars?

Nice, it's movin' right along!

I think to know how (or if) the existing orders will be markedly impacted, we need to know what the current planned volume of inbound vehicles per mo is, the frequency of the shipments, and whether they have a contingency plan to increase the production volume in these type of scenarios.

The OP mentioned a setback of 70 vehicles that had to be "reproduced." I'd be interested in knowing what percentage of the month's planned shipments this loss represented. Does anyone know how many ships are typically utilized by BMW to supply the U.S. in a given month? Follow up: Typically, how many M3's per?

Xcell: Hopefully it's a minor setback...

We have no idea how many M3s were affected by this to the extent that they would need to be reproduced. I doubt that it is more than 20 given there are many other damaged cars around the damaged M3s. That should not have a significant impact on the supply chain. The US should be getting about 700 cars a month (50,000 cars in 6 years), but it could be less at this point since full scale US production has most likely not started. Either way, it will not be significant once production reaches anticipated levels shortly.

You are welcome. Also, timsev on the other thread is saying these were all going to be display cars for the press. If some of them need to be rebuilt, obviously, people waiting for production might be somewhat affected, but again I really don't think 20 cars will make a noticable difference once US production picks up.

I feel bad for the people who lost their cars on E90post, but this is what BMWNA gets for being dicks with the M3 launch!

I also noticed that none of the M3's have the front bumper reflectors, which could mean that they were never US-Spec cars anyway....either that or they just fell off?
