Blue ridge parkway

hi all, coordinating pcd with a drive back up to boston. I remember a top gear episode where the 3 of them headed there but kept mentioning the tedious speed limit. For those that have been on it, is this strictly enforced? Helicopter/lazer/speed traps?

Would you recommend it for spirited driving?

Thanks!

It's a great ride. It's patrolled like anywhere but not crazy. I have had lots if fun through those mountains.

If time permits I would suggest taking a longer drive to the tail of the dragon. If your not in this area often it might be worth it. There are many other less known places but that one is now a tourist attraction in a way.

It's not bad but the dragon is what you want for "spirited" driving. I just don't know if dragon weather is good enough right now.

Thanks guys. This would not be until summer 2015. I should clarify spirited. I dont need to drive triple digits, but to see wide open road and feel shackled at the feet, not sure I could enjoy that. And it was a long stretch of road that made navigating fairly straightforward. Will look into the dragon, though that seems to only be a short stretch of road in comparison

The dragon is only one small portion of a large ring of roads. You can easily spend 3 hours taking the entire loop which also includes the Cherohala skyway. And since you are going in the summer you DO NOT want to miss this. Especially the tail. It is different kind of thrill than European passes.

THANK YOU for this map!! I'm doing PCD during the first week of January... will I be able to make this drive? Not looking for anything spirited, just a tour of the area while making my way back to the lone star state

Honestly...I'm not sure if the weather will work out or not that time of year. I've never been in the winter. Some really good resources to keep an eye on Dragon status are www.TailoftheDragon.com and then follow Killboy on Facebook. Killboy is the original Dragon photographer and owns the gift shop/cafe at the beginning of the Dragon itself.

Thanks for all the info and tips! I sat down last night and created a map with ridewithgps to get me from pcd to the 120mike loop and back to boston. That is smack on the numbers for break in period.

Looking forward to it. Youtube has a few videos of cars running the dragon, looks tight!

Report back what you think if you remember this thread. Beautiful m, the photo from ED in front of the castle is superb. AY m3 here as well, very similar builds.

Thanks for the resources. Weather looks cool but not cold these days, but fully aware things can change in the next couple weeks. Either way, wonder if the PC runs all-seasons on the ///Ms in the winter?

Winter is fine for the dragon. As long as you realize the road is cool and your not your a drift junkie.

Those that have done it, is the 360>165>143>129 worth the double back?
It looks like I could start the TOTD, jump off on 129 and take that to 40/81. Cuts off a few miles, but thinking by the end of the first run, it might seem tiresome to keep doing nothing but tight 2nd gear switchbacks.

jealous of those that live down there. while planning my route, came across this little stretch of twisty bliss in TN. NC side turns into beautiful gravel.
Pending PCD approval, I'll be in the area week of 27 April. Would be down for a drive.
