N47 engine change help!
Hi guys - long standing BMW owner but new to the forum do bear with me! I'm hoping to pick the brains of anyone thats clued up on the nightmare n47 Diesel engine!
I'll start at the beginning... So the cam chain snapped on my fiancées 118d 2007... Took the engine out and head off to find all the valves looking good and straight - sent it off to a head specialist who confirmed 2 bent valves on piston 4... So I asked them to change them (supply and fit) and pressure test the head. So far so good - head was straight with no other damage whatsoever after having the valves replaced. I put the engine back together, new genuine BMW updated chain kit with all the guides and tensioners - had a Sytner BMW tech time it up as a foreigner job (he used the proper tool). Put the engine back in - all sorted! Drove great for 200 miles then bang! One of the new valves dropped, broke and obliterated the head, piston and sleeve... Great! No one is willing to accept liability so I'm cutting my losses and looking for a complete replacement engine... I've found one which is out of a 2010 car - engine code is n47d20c... I believe mine is an n47d20a... So my question is will the difference in the 'c' and 'a' suffix mean it won't fit? I'm being told different things! Some say yeah it will go in - others say it needs a water hose modifying to make it compatible! Anyone had any experience with this? Did a search and couldn't find anything! Thanks |

There are now several 2.0L N47 variants:
N4720A - 2007 / 2008 / 2009 N4720B - Specifically for 123d Twin Turbo N4720C - 2010 onwards N4720D - Used in some F-series I believe I think replacement will be simple for a decent independent. Maybe some pipework changed between a and c I'm not sure. I've never done this before. Best person to speak to would be 'old grey steve' |

My breaker told me that you cannot fit N47C into cars with N47A.
He also told me that all of his N47A were selling like hot cakes. I asked him question that why don't these guys fit N47C and his response was 'it does not fit without major adaptation.'.

Cheers guys. I've been told it will fit and the only difference is one water pipe coming off the block... I might have to go and see the engines and take mine with me for comparison.
Nightmare!! Thanks for the replies |

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread, but!
What is the difference in castings of the engine-block between the different N47 engines? We are building a killer 123d with north of 400Hp and it seems like the block don't like it and I am curios if any of the different block-part numbers are stronger. Who is the "old grey Steve"? does he gather the scriptures and has all the answers? |
