Is BMW actually holding the cars until march?

Has this been confirmed? Or is it another rumor? The only reason I can see them doing this is so DCT will be available from the start.

I heard most of the manual cars have already reached US soil. However, the actual release is not until March. Thus There will probably a DCT confirmation before then so cars with DCT are available in march as well.

This from my rep yessterday...

We just received the update today. Below is part of it directly from BMW:

...heres the update on our launch activities. Weve decided on two major launch weekends for the first half of 2008, please see below. The first( 29 March -30 March 08) will see the 1 Series Coupe, the M3 Coupe as well as the MINI Clubman being launched.

Please note that STRICTLY NO CAR is to be delivered before the launch date -even though it was produced earlier.

A press release is not the same as a launch. The M3 has had its release in North America, but not its launch.

Hence why the website still shows nothing on the new M except as a future model.

Until we see an official press release on the U.S. launch date from BMW NA, we should remain skeptical of what reps or sales people say...

My rep told me two weeks ago that MSRP on a base m3 coupe would be $64K. Glad he was wrong! But I learned my lesson regarding reps.

March production start is confirmed, but with limited availability until July. A rumor has it that they will be on the US DCS by next week.

ok, so there hasn't been an official statement from BMW then? Just hearsay from reps... That's great news.

Delivery hold

My CA says this is often the case. The idea is to have all the cars arrive at all dealers about the same time, even to places like North Dakota or Alaska.

Boooo! I just emailed my dealer about this...

Quote:
That is the official launch date - so yes all cars will be released to
dealers on the same day - I do not have that specific date - but it seems to
be about the right time frame...

Apparently, unlike the E46 M3, dealers can alter the specs and sell their "demo" first allotment to customers, which many are doing. That, to me, dilutes the whole idea of a "launch".

yea i agree. My dealer is getting two "demo" cars which they are going to keep. 1 for showroom and 1 for test drive.

Is 2 demo cars alot for 1 dealer? I remember reading somewhere that most dealers were getting 1 and really small dealers werent getting any at all. If 2 is alot for demo cars i hope my dealers monthly allocation is big!

My guy hasn't mentioned anything about a demo car, just that I'm getting the first car available. Maybe it is a "demo"?

The second car is undobtedly a normal allocation that they want to display. You can bet if someone offers them a serious premium for it it won't stay in the showroom long.

My understanding is that the dealers have to keep "Demos" until BMW says otherwise. If dealers don't comply with this, they can and likely will suffer severe consequences as a result.

Not for this launch, apparently. That's the way it was for the E46.
