On the way home from Palisades Mall!

Drove an hr 1/2 to get there and everything was fine. On the way home, the car started rocking side to side/ vibrating while waiting at a red light ( like an old washing machine ). As I let go of the gas and come to a stop, the mpg needle would go all the way to 12mpg as if I floored the gas and the rpm needle would jump to 1500 at idle, then fluctuate from let's say 900-1500 at the same time until I start moving again. While in first the acceleration feels alil jumpy also. Turned the radio down and I could hear a whistle type noise in the engine. After 30 mins driving with the problem the Check Engine light came on. Still had another 30 mins to drive to reach the house. Turned the heater off, problem still kept happening. Came home and the engine gave off a weird smell. From what I read, it Could've been the coil packs or spark plugs? Mind you I have the ABS, Brake and 4x4 lights on due to transfer case issue which will be replaced when my warranty kicks in in another week. What do you guys think the problem is and how should I go about it

If you go out and turn the car on right now, does it still exhibit the symptoms?
Also, you could post a phone-cam video of the thing misbehaving. Much easier to figure things out that way.

Also: do you have a BMW-capable code scanner, and what does it say? This right here is the big gun of diagnostics.

Just started the car. The check engine light is still popping up but the symptoms are not happening as of now. If they were I'd post the vid. The rpm needle did rise very slightly as I heard a quick little pop in the engine bay. I believe my pops has a bmw code scanner. I'll post the codes tomorrow

Nice thanks guys, hope all is well with the car. I'll be setting up an appointment with my dealer on Monday. I'll still post up that video if the car acts up as I start it tomorow. Is my car in driving condition or should I stash it until it is resolved?

If it's just a bad coil you'll be running rough and down on power--you'll have a 5-cylinder BMW until you fix it.

If your car isn't running right...DONT continue driving. You can do a ton of damage that way. That much raw fuel in exhaust systems kills cats and O2 sensors...

Yes, if it is in fact a coil issue and that cylinder is not firing then you definately don't want to be driving it around as the injector will still be firing and not being ignited will wash out the rings and can dilute your oil with said fuel. No Bueno... But if you're only going a few miles then not to big of a deal. Good luck with the car.
