Charge Pipe cracked at 24,000 miles

I was on the eastbound 45 toll road (75 mph speed limit) when I heard a "bang" and loss of power. Every time I hit the accelerator I could hear turbo noise so I figured it was the charge pipe - sure enough it was! Luckily, I had purchased a CP-E charge pipe so I went home and got it installed in 15 minutes. It amazes that BMW has such a crappy plastic part on this vehicle and that they don't have a recall, considering how prone to failure it is. Only 24k miles on the car.

Couldn't agree more, should absolutely be a recall. Maybe there is a technical service bulletin about them but it's the very fist thing I did to mine when I bought it in September.

Yep, that's why I tell all the guys that are upping boost that it's even more important to get the N55 CP upgrade.

Yes! I have had my JB4 on for less than a year. Anyone buying a JB4 should just go ahead and buy a CP.

We've seen em fail on stock cars as well as modded. It's only a matter of time with these things.

Mine broke in less than 1000 miles after getting Cobb tuned, POS plastic. Glad to hear you upgraded.

I had actually bought it quite some time ago but had been waiting until after my VANOS bolts were done to install it. My VANOS bolts got done just before Thanksgiving and then I got busy at work and forgot about it.

I have been running Cobb for almost a full year now with different tunes and my stock pipe is still fine, guess I've been lucky so far

Yes, you have been lucky. As Tiago pointed out, many people have had the CP crack even fully stock - running a tune like Cobb or JB4 only hastens the process. I suggest that, at the very least, you buy a replacement metal CP and stick it in your closet. Or better yet, just replace it. Otherwise, when it cracks, you won't be able to drive it until the replacement arrives.

It will eventually fail and i recommend that you get an aftermarket one before it does.
I currently have a customer who wants the long version charge pipe with the 2 meth bungs anodized in black. His stock charge pipe failed and now he is waiting for the new charge pipe to be anodized. This process can take up to 7 days.

The N55 is notorious for cracking charge pipes. This is why we stock the ER N55 charge pipes as we ship 1-2 a week to customers who blow them and get left stranded without a car. Only one who benefits is FEDEX as we need to overnight them for 80-100 bux.. ouch...

Wise investment. The VRSF charge pipe is around $200. I bet FedEx to Ft. McMurray is at least that much (lived in Edmonton when I was young)
