Will my car disintegrate?
Ok, so I'm being sarcastic. But I did just take delivery of a new M4. I wasn't told about keeping it under 100mph / 5500rpms during the first 1200 miles. Well, I may have hit 100 once and I definitely crossed 5500rpms 10 - 15 times.
I don't know about the M4 break in process, like its intention of purpose. Will I be ok? I'll take it way easier from now on until I cross the 1200 mark, just wanted to make sure I didn't mess up anything important. Thanks. |

You are fine. A lot of debate on this topic with some adhering to and others disregarding the recommendations from BMW.
Just vary your speed and RPMs (below 5500). Have fun.

LOL @ thread title.
You'll be fine, just try to keep it moderate from now on but you haven't messed anything up

Yup, you'll live. There seems to be those who follow the procedure to the dot and those more like me who go all Italian in the book.
In case yours blows up, let me be the first to use the phrase we all know and love: I TOLD YOU SO!

Go ahead and look around for all of the threads about people dropping engines, leaking oil, low power and the like. It will be a very lonely search. Off the top of my head I can remember a guy with a bad cylinder head and another that his "friend" performed a money shift. With the number of cars out there now you would be seeing engine failures by now if these things were not rock solid. Drive the car, enjoy the car and do your best to color inside the lines. If you can't color inside the lines go crazy. Post videos, crazy is cool.

In the philosophical sense, Entropy suggests that on a long enough time scale, your car will indeed disintegrate.
In your lifetime, your exceeding the RPM limit slightly during break-in will have no ill effect. Many race engine builders prefer to break in their engines at high RPM after an initial short-term piston ring seating procedure. Many suggest that engines broken in at full load and high RPM show slightly higher compression and overall better performance. With that said, I still suggest following the manual simply to avoid any liability on your end, from a warranty standpoint.
