BMW Sales M Certification (pics and video)

Yesterday, we had the opportunity to drive and learn more about the new X5M and X6M at the BMW Performance Center in SC.

We had the opportunity to test it against the Mercedes ML 63 and Porsche Cayenne Turbo.

The BMW's were powerful and handled track conditions extremely well. The steering was precise and the cars handled so much better than the competition. Funny that both Porsche and MB didn't really do much to differentiate the higher end cars from the regular Cayenne or ML. (except a few badges). The ML showed a quad exhaust but they were just 2 additional exhaust tips that had no function. I also noticed that both MB and Porsche do not offer any special colors to set them apart...BMW has Donnington Grey and Long Beach Blue. Horsepower and torque was quite noticeable on the BMW compared to the MB. All 3 models had very good exhaust tones. The MB's traction control and transmission seemed to intervene when pushed to it's limits. The Cayenne Turbo was pretty powerful but seemed to be disconnected to what the brand was all about. Its interior overwhelmed me with the amount of buttons on the console. The door panel alone had about 16 different buttons.

Here's a video of me driving the X5M. TURN UP THE VOLUME!!!

Here are some pics of the event.

Very jealous! What was the verdict? How do they compare to their predecessors?

As expected, the newer cars have better technology, more horsepower, more torque, better gas mileage and a lighter car.

BTW, at the Nurburgring (Nordschleife) the times on the X5M were the same as an E92 M3 and it's 0-60 is 4 sec.

How do the new X5M's drive compared to the last generation?

I have a '12 X5M and the whole feel and drive is very different from my wife's '15 X5 with all options on it (suspension, dynamic, etc). I like the feel of the '15 X5 better than my X5M which feels "heavier" and just not as nice.

I was thinking of trading in my X5M for either a new X5 or if the X5M drives more like her '15 X5 then my '12 X5M I would go for the new X5M.

Please check the posts above. The X5M compared to the the current generation X5 5.0 has a lot of luxury and comfort similarities. IMO it is refined and practical for everyday use but can also be an absolute beast on the track.

I'm incredibly jealous! I can only imagine how enjoyable the whole experience was.

Was the interior of the X5 M the Mugello Red? If it was, did you happen to get a photo of it, like you did the Aragon Brown in the X6 M?

Thanks. I was interested in the comfort, handling and feel of the X5M relative to the last X5M generation as well as the standard non-M X5. Glad to hear you feel it shares the luxury and comfort to the current gen X5's! Love the new ones. My '12 X5M feels dated already in comparison.

There were a few Mugello red interiors there but unfortunately, I was not able to take a photo of it. It looked really good IMO. I probably would order it if I was in the market for the X5M.

Another question. As they tested at the event. Is the X5M better then the Cayenne TURBO? in terms of acceleration, transmission, handling etc.

I don't think there is an official link to this event. If you have Instagram, #BMWMCertification has a bunch of pictures from the attendees.

Thanks for the information. I ordered Mugello Red in the X5 M order I placed last week. I haven't been able to see any samples of either mugello red, or Donington grey, so the whole order is a leap of faith based upon others' reviews, and the photos I've seen online.

Being selfish for a minute, they need to stop building press cars and start building customer orders!

Great pics! Thanks for sharing!

Unfortunately I'm now torn again between Long Beach Blue and Donington Grey.

LOL. Me too!

The only pics I've seen so far of the Donington Gray X6M are those ones from Palbay with the black wheels :|

Ugh. First world problems.

Every time I see it in the configurator or in press pics LBB looks gorgeous. Then I see real life pics and I feel it's better suited to the X6. But that's partially because it's always on the X6.

A friend at BMW drove an LBB X5 M in my exact configuration and shared photos. I loved it when I saw it. But still not sure.

Agree with you on the dated feel for the previous gen X5M especially of the interior. Exterior still looks great imho. The interior of my '15 M4 makes the '13 X5M interior look very bleak and bland. The new X5M interior looks very modern and much more pleasing to the eye.

We all know a great deal about these vehicles, so the research we end up doing is mostly in regards to colors/options. No BMW dealership near me had any samples of the new M specific colors or leathers, so I was left to my own devices to find examples of what the colors looked like in real life, because we all know how photos can distort colors. I found the video in the attached link to be helpful. I hope it will be helpful to some of you, as well, especially those of you considering long beach blue and Aragon brown.
