break in period min / max mileage

I'm aware the break in period is 1200 miles. Out of curiosity does anyone know if there's a min and or max mileage for the break in period.

I don't think so, unless you don't hit 1200 miles in 12 months.

The manual states initial break in is at 1200 miles, but full break in by 3000 miles.

M4 Break-in

I brought my new M4 into the dealer for snow tires with 400 miles on it in December. The dealer (Thompson in Pa.) said they could do the oil change at that time. It now says next oil change in 9000 miles.

Not sure if this is what you mean but I was told the dealer wouldn't CPO the car if service was not done prior to 2000mi mark. This could hurt value theoretically depending on what you decide to do with the car down the road. Also it's probably for a reason so I would do it at or around 1200 as they suggest.

What was trying to get at. What would be the lowest mileage you should have the service done i.e. 900 miles and what should be the absolute max i.e. 1500

Reason I ask, is during my break in period, I want to take a 1500 round trip ride, and i know I won't have the 1200 in before the time comes. Yes, I can take the other car, but like a kid i don't want to .

Many people have a many different feelings here. I would say 1200 would be ideal as it's directed by bmw. A few hundred miles over is probably fine too. I think it's more important to vary the rpms and drive easy but that's just me; others will dispute this. If your under 2k I wouldn't worry terribly.

Have fun and drive it.

So what is the consensus here? I was told to try to limit the RPM's >4,000 for that first 1200 miles. We all know how hard that is, what say ye?

I think the manual says under 5k for the first 1200 miles. I don't think I really use a lot more than that now no real need as a dd.
