Official Virtanen Industries F8X Shifter Cozie DIY Installation Guide

So after months and months of waiting (and nagging), I have finally received my official F8X ///M MT shifter cozie from Virtanen Industries. After a lot of debate on options, we elected to get the full on Alpaca wool construction - which I am sure will be worth the extra spend given the high wear and tear my shifter cozies tend to get.

As installation ended up being a bit more difficult than I anticipated, I thought it would be helpful to put together a little pictoral D.I.Y. to help other forum members.

Step 1: The packaging

Name: IMG_5607.png
Views: 1540
Size: 397.8 KB

It came by International Priority Fed Ex - while the customs stamp said it had a value of only $1.00, ignore that. This is waaay more valuable.

Step 2: What is included

Name: shifter 1.jpg
Views: 892
Size: 115.1 KB

Two things were in the Fed Ex envelope, the cozie (obviously) and the instructions which, in this case, were included in a singing birthday card addressed to my car (who recently passed her 2,000 km break in service). That was a nice touch and just shows the extra care and attention the manufacturer will go to in order to make customers happy!

Step 3: The tools you'll need

Name: shifter 2.jpg
Views: 802
Size: 105.7 KB

Self explanatory.

Step 4: More tools....

Name: shifter 3.jpg
Views: 865
Size: 111.9 KB

I needed lots of tools....

Step 5: Hit a glitch

Name: shifter 4.jpg
Views: 831
Size: 98.0 KB

Either unclear instructions (the translation from the original Finnish was terrible) OR too many tools....either way, bit of a misfire here and I had to start over.

Fortunately, the manufacturer's tech support was very helpful, even though I was calling at 4 am and the person who answered the phone just kept complaining about a lack of coffee...

Step 6: Attempt #2

Name: shifter 5.jpg
Views: 818
Size: 114.7 KB

After my wife woke me up from my tool related stupor and I got on the phone with tech support, I realized the installation was supposed to happen in the car. Frankly, that could have been clearer....Anyway, I got things in order here....

Step 7: Success

Name: shifter 6.jpg
Views: 811
Size: 116.1 KB

After a bit of swearing and some more liberal use of the tools, I got it together. Here it is installed....

Step 8: Action shot

Name: shifter 7.jpg
Views: 860
Size: 109.5 KB

...and here it is in action. By my rough 'butt dyno', I would say it easily feels like it adds 45 HP to this car given that my shifts are now down to 0.0000000000000001 seconds. Basically, any faster and I would be moving faster than the speed of light, which relativity says I cannot do....and I wouldn't want to do that as it would cause the fabric of the universe to unravel faster than a spool of alpaca wool...

Conclusions?

On the whole, I am pretty satisfied with this product. It performs well and the looks well...they can't be beat. Plus, as a side bonus, my 4 am tech support call resulted in my learning a whole bunch of new swears in Finnish.

I would highly recommend this product

(thanks Lups)

To my defense, I did try a regular postal office, and this very nice lady saw the things I thought were good enough and she tore me a new one. She taught me how to do those (still can't remember the technique's name) and told me to redo these.

In all fairness, you guys cried so much about the cold shift knob, any self respecting humanist would do their best to help.

The man in the FedEx office refused to ship across the border with no value mentioned. As the maker I'm happy to claim the title of the most horrible modification made to the F8x generation and after I get @Wah a new one (he couldn't install his, so thanks for this guide), I will never want to see yarn again.

Thanks for the thread, I will never live this down.

There seems to be some fitment issues in the DCT version, as mine clearly did not fit. The manufacturer was responsive, however, and a replacement was fabricated immediately. Judging by past performance, I expect delivery sometime in october via donkey back mail.

But it will be accompanied by some crazy story that will somehow make up for the 8 month delay....

Dude stop bitching! You gave me the measurements. It is not my fault your A. I. Virtanen (what a perfect way to commemorate my hero) is small.

I would like to say that unlike the op, you got two cards. With cows in them. I am not pleased with your attitude towards the shipping schedule. I mean, it's still snowing! And you know very well your projects end better than mine so I'm willing to send the extra yarns to you and you can take over!

Wah, clearly you either didn't read the instructions, or there was a quality control issue at the manufacturer. Mine was a "snug" fit and could benefit from a little stretching...

Well, I definitely didn't read the instructions, because I just never do. Regardless, knowing Lups .. ehem, I mean, knowing the manufacturer, she did this on purpose. You see, the manufacturer has had it out for me ever since I made fun of her last fall while she was attempting (and failing, might I add) to get the exhaust tips off of her car. Well, after a couple hours of alcohol, excuses, and foul language, she gave up and bribed her hubby. So to this day, I remind her every chance I get that she should leave the mods to the big boys. Well, apparently that isn't going over so well. So while she claims that the defective DCT cozie is my fault, because I sent her the dimensions of the DCT knob, the fact that yours goes on just further proves my point. Its passive aggression at its finest.

Now I will run and hide, because I know a shitstorm is coming my way.

You bitter little shit!

Go to a gym, get some muscles, stretch it! I've ruined so many wool shirts that I know this would work!

I made you a new one already but the damn Kissa had a piece of it. It agreed with her better than my hair eaten the night before.

Quality control issues only happens with product of any quality. The word can not be used here.

Yelling at your customers online and calling them names...it is an interesting customer relations strategy. Frankly, I assume now that you must have worked for an airline in a previous life to develop client relation skill like that....

Hahaha!

The demand supply curb working on my favor here! He can't tell me to piss off since his hands can't take the cold. He knows no other idiot who can do these of would do him one so I'm like a god of crafts to him!

I do admit customer relations would not be my strong suit. It's still his fault, he was mean first! (yes, I'm five)

Lol!

These were originally designed to make our members in the white zone feel the sting for their complaining about snow and ice when I miss those the most from home. It is fair to say the joke now is on me, because as seen above, I have zero skills with this kind of stuff.

Sure, I'll make you one too. I still have yarn for a few and my I can actually try on unlike those dct things. And wah doesn't even drive the damn car, just polishes it! Sends me weather updates while the car rots. Of course he needs one asap.

Joke or no joke that stick is cold in the morning, noon and night, so if you still have some material to mock me one up it would be greatly appreciated! As you can see we are suffering here (original color is BSM)

I'll get on it tonight. Lets just never talk about this again
as a mod, this is the worst for this generation, but apparently we need some grandma here to do these for a good cause!
