Image used above is the Vision Gran Turismo Race Car for Gran Turismo 6.

Updated with Scott26's info about two M2 versions reportedly shown behind-the-scenes at the Geneva auto show:

We know the BMW M2 is coming, from our various spy photos and from its presence on the BMW 2016 model year map. And with the M3/M4 and X5M/X6M now launched, BMW M will now focus on the M2.

BMW head of design, Adrian van Hooydonk, may have just dropped an official hint. Speaking to Autocar, he stated that "The E30 M3 has a really big fan base, and we are going to be taking cues from it for a future product."

This reference could simply be an acknowledgement of the 2016 M2, or, as Autocar further speculates, the exact model being referred to could be a special edition M2 with distinctive wheelarch crease and fixed wing, released next year to celebrate BMW's 100th anniversary. Weight saving would also be key. On that, Hooydonk says: "I’d have to give Colin Chapman the credit for the ‘performance through light weight’ mantra, but that was another big factor for the E30, and that is also a priority for us." If Autocar's speculation comes true, this is shaping up to be a M2 CSL or GTS model.

Our earlier info indicates that the M2 will be powered by a new updated N55 engine (N55B30T0) good for approximately 370-380 PS (365-375 HP). The prototypes have been tested with both manual and auto (DCT) transmissions.

Production of the M2 for the U.S. market begins this November.

Sounds like BMW wants to give itself a special gift for its 100th anniversary.

As stupid as this my sound, this car may well prevent me from buying a 997 Turbo or new M4.

This would get me to sell my e92 ///M and I didn't think anything BMW was making would do that.

Cheers,

I wonder what the release timing of this special edition will be like relative to the "regular" M2...early/late 2016? I'd love to hold out for this one, but will need a car by May.

Why do they think the "future product" isn't the M2 itself?

Nice and all, but for the 100th birthday i was expecting something more than just another variation of a car that was already pretty likely to receive this treatment anyway.

+1. People just adding words to the interview and reading what they want to believe. Plus the chance of it coming to the US is slim to none even if this was true.

Hopefully they build the one in the picture. But, they never build the one in the picture.

In the words of Phil Collins... "...I've been waiting for this moment.. all my life..."

It sure will look nice next to my E30 M3.

Doesn't sound stupid at all. I waiting for the LCI m4, or maybe a Competition pack model. This car is also on my radar as of now.

Funny I was just thinking of a lightweight M2 this morning. If they are truly going for lightweight and a throwback to the e30 makes you wonder if it will be a turbo-4.
