How do I remove the rattling front ashtray?

The ashtray in my M4 rattles over rough roads. How can I remove it so I can add padding to the bottom of it?

It's the front one in this pic I found on the Internet:

The ashtray insert usually just pulls out.
Put your fingers against the vertical edge towards the rear of the and pull upward and backward

It doesn't feel like it will come out. I don't want to apply too much force, but I'll try a bit of a firmer pull in a bit.

After having a closer look, it's all one piece of moulded plastic - there looks to be no way to remove it without taking out large parts of the dash

I don't think that is an ashtray - looks like the non smoker pack with a 12V socket blanking cover rather than a cigarette lighter- Hence why it canot be removed........

VO1M is correct. I assumed you had the ashtray since you mentioned it in the first post. That is just the storage tray , not the ashtray version.

To remove it you have to remove the rim around the Idrive controller, then the trim around the gear shit, then the screws holding in on the cup holders and this storage tray.

You sure the rattle is from there ?

I think so, when I push down on that area the rattles quieten down a bit but don't stop completely.

Sounds like a lot of work, maybe I'll just live with the rattle. Thanks for the help!

Nope. I can only hear it when music isn't playing, which isn't all that often. I didn't want to start removing i-Drive trim.

No it isn't, but it has the same storage tray as on my M4 and I was too lazy to go outside and take a picture of it. So I pulled that one off the Internet.

My car also rattles from this area. It seems like a PITA to take apart.
