BMW recommends all dealers to swap out the OE Bosch coils on N54s for the Delphi ones used on the N55 at change intervals, according to member BavAuto here, who is usually an authority on such matters.

Not sure what you mean. BMW realised that the Bosch units weren't that reliable, and employed Delphi ones on the N55. Since then, BMW dealers are instructed to install the Delphi coils on N54s also...apart from the metal housing, their function is identical. Theory goes that they are less prone to failure due to temperature, as the metal housing acts a little like a heatsink and helps the coil hold its shape in the hot N54. I'm not authority on this, but I believe the info I have read comes from those in the know.

Did you receive Delphi packs or Bosch? Did the new ones look identical to your old?

Is there a service bulletin to back this up? RealOEM still applies Bosch parts to n54 cars.

realoem.com refers to parts that were fitted to cars new, not revised parts. Unless that part then becomes discontinued. I don't know if there's a service bulletin or not. This was written recently on the forum by BavAuto, I've never seen that member provide bad information. Like I say, I'm just regurgitating something I heard, nothing more. I can't help you any further than that. Suffice it to say there are also plenty of other reviews on the forum of Delphi coils used on N54s with total success. When I change my coils I will use the Delphi units.

Not to long ago, I had to replace a coil and at first the dealership gave me the Delphi one (with the metal housing), but was told that since I was only replacing one, I should use to older (Bosch) model to match the ones in my car.

Thanks, I'll look it up.
I agree with the above post though if you're switching to Delphi, its better to replace all 6 to stay consistent.

I'm at 45k miles on my N55, bought a set of Delphi ones for $200 shipped on eBay. I'm going to install them this upcoming week. Personally I didn't want the Delphi cause of the metal but hey if BMW sells them I can't be in crap cause they recommend it now.
