Alarm and software update ques

I'm looking to install the alarm myself in my E90 (Jan 2006 build) which should be here in about a month or so (now "awaiting transport"). I plan on following the DIY instructions posted here. Would I need any software updates, or will my Jan 2006 build E90 already come with all of the software updates? I've heard of some people needing to go to the dealer to "activate" the alarm after they install it themselves. But it looks like post-Sept. build cars don't need this, they are all set. Can anyone else confirm this?

Also, would a pre-Sept. build car need a software update or dealer activation to activate the alarm? If so, what is it? CIP20? (My sister has a May build E90 and would probably want me to install it on hers too.)

Thanks! This forum has been very informative and helpful so far, especially this DIY section!

I got these worked w/o activation for my pre-Sept production: clown nose indicator flashing, ultrasonic sensor and door-open detection. If you want the hood-open detection and piezoelectric sound, you'll need to have the dealer programmed it for $100-$150.

They charged you that much for that? Is that only because you had a pre-Sept production?

If they're going to charge me $100-150 for that, then I might as well have them install it altogether for $200.

Can anyone else confirm? Has anyone installed an alarm themselves on a post-Sept production?

There is no difference fro pre and post September cars for the alarm install.

If you want it to work properly you have to have the dealer add the Alarm Software to the car

Okay, thanks for the info. Do all of the dealers charge for this software update? Is it really around $100-150?

If so, then it's really not worth it for anyone to do it themselves. $230 for the alarm + $150 for software = $380 for the DIY (or do-it-mostly-yourself) route. As opposed to $450 to have the dealer just do everything. For me, it would cost more because I would have to buy a jack and a torque wrench (I don't have either right now).

My dealer (Century BMW in Huntsville, AL) did the activation for $40. They also asked if I wanted a computer update since there's a recall, & I said yes. My 330 also needed the light cover replaced since it lacked the slots for the motion sensor, so they replaced that under warrany as well. I made it easy for them by bringing in a printout of the SIB.

I'd have to say my dealer :rocks: for service.
