Somebody school me. I'm about to get a tune on my M4 and I have the option for a 91-octane or 93-octane tune. I'm in NJ and from what remember, pretty much all the major brands have 93 for Premium and 91 for Plus. I think even Sunoco has 94 Ultra but can't remember the last time I passed one. Then it dawned on me that different states may have different octane ratings and availability.
My concern is that if I am traveling out of state and I am tuned for 93, I don't want to be stuck with adding lesser octane. Therefor, I am planning on playing it safe and tuning for 91 where all gas stations should have at least that in their pumps. Also, a few years back after Hurricane Sandy hit my area hard, all the gas stations ran out of 93 for a loooong time. What would you guys do depending on your location? Edit: I also read that the state of PA does not officially regulate octane rating at the pump so there have been many occasions where people have paid for Premium and got something else |

I'm from jersey and i know all the stations around here offer 93, and i'm pretty sure NY/PA/CT do as well but people who live in those states can chime in to confirm, how far out of state do you plan on traveling?
Edit: I plan on tuning soon and would without hesitation do 93

The streets are not M friendly... Way too many cars everywhere, but we do have canyons for days so it makes up for it

93 here in NY. Some places like Delta Sonic offer 100 octane, but it's like $9 gallon. Some Sunoco offer 94 but usually get Mobil 93.

I've never had a problem being able to find 93 and I've lived on the east coast my whole life. Out west in Santa Fe they go down to 85 and I think only has high as 91. I guess it depends how often you plan to travel out of New England

I'd go for 93. My S4 was tuned for 93 when Sandy hit. I just drove it more cautiously than normal, which was also helpful because I wanted to use the minimum gas I could since it was so hard to find.

You guys should move to Norcal. I have 94 - 100 octane unleaded available. Takes me 10-15 minute drive to get there.
It is very pricey though. $4.99/gallon for 94 last fill up. |
