How well do lowering springs handle rough tri-state roads?

I'm considering going with the H&R springs 1" drop all around on stock suspension (it seems most people on here are doing that). On my old 135i it was always recommended to get a matching pair of shocks when getting springs, so I got KW V1 coilovers for over $1,100.

I'd like to know how the car handles the rough roads in this area with just springs on stock shocks, in the different settings (Comfort/Sport/Sport+) - I'm on the 225/40 and 245/35 PSS tires.

Thanks

I think for the most part, people with H&R springs lower more for aesthetic purposes as opposed to actual performance gains. Although, it does inspire more confidence throughout the turns, nothing will replace the feel of a full coilover setup.

I am mainly interested in finding out whether the aftermarket springs still allow the suspension to handle the shitty roads in New York/tri-state. I'll edit the original post to make it more clear.

Ive had my springs for almost 20k now and I live in florida but have been up in Jersey for about a month now for a summer internship. So far I've been okay. Avoiding potholes as much as possible but I am not any more worried than I would be with the normal springs. Car can still take hits just fine with these springs with no issues. Only concern is my front bumper has caught the road once or twice with these steeper driveways and these drop offs of curbs onto the street.

Thanks. Yeah I should've mentioned, I have the Performance Lip and pretty scared it will rip off on a driveway lol.

Probably will lol. I had a lip too but I hit a turtle down in Florida and there went my lip... But if I had it here I'm sure it would have been torn off by now. Hate to say it but I don't think it's a good idea.

Hmm, maybe I'll go for the Dinan springs. Only a 1/2 inch in the front. Pretty minimal but better than nothing lol.

Personally the HR springs feel really cheap, kinda made my car bouncy. I just ordered the billstein pss coil over kit. Going to pair that with the Dinan sway bar kit.

The roads up here are shit, I would never lower my car in NY, those gnarly bumps need as much suspension travel as you can give them sometimes.

Yeah I guess you're right. I just hate the amount of wheel gap, it's an eyesore to me, being used to my 135i on KW V1 suspension. But I didn't have a lip on that car. This M Performance Lip cost me way too much to compromise it at every uneven surface!

At the very least I should probably wait to see how this winter goes with this car on stock suspension with the lip. I drive my car every single day.

Don't let people scare you, even in NY you will be fine! I am located in the Throggs Neck part of of the Bronx and my old e92 was slammed on KW V1's with a carbon fiber front lip and I never once had any problems. I now currently have the RW Carbon front lip and will be lowering the car on H&R springs and suspect I will have no problems once again since it is a much more mild drop than the KW allowed me. You just need to be a little extra cautious thats all

Still open to more opinions on this lol. Spacers on the way, now debating springs or not (and if so, H&R or Dinan).

+1

I have had KW V1's on my e90 for last 30K miles and used to commute almost 60miles in city and Jersey on daily basis. I didn't have any problems, only in winters a couple of time i had rubbing issues because of snow . Other than that V1's are great the handling is improved(IMO), I fell much more confident driving my e90 than F22 lol.

Dinan for me... there's a thread on the H&R springs not supporting the weight of our cars.

Here's my car on Dinan

And you're in Jersey so can you comment on how the suspension handles potholes? How often do you bottom out?

And where did you have the install done?

I have now been driving my car lowered on H&R springs for a few months in the Bronx and Westchester NY, constantly driving on 95 with a ton of imperfections in the road with zero issue. If H&R couldn't handle the weight of our cars then why is more than half the forum running H&R and also have you heard anyone post about something happening because of the springs? No. Plenty of people even go to the track with them with no issues. And worst case that I have read is a strut leaking which can't be blamed on H&R because any time you lower a car on stock struts there is a chance of prematurely wearing them out quicker than normal.

So I've hit handful of pot holes and the suspension was not the issue... it was the wheels and sidewall I was running (19 with 225/35 Front and 255/30 rear). I recently put a square setup on my car (played it safe with) 235/35/19 all around. After the new setup I feel a difference in ride and when I hit a pothole or leave my driveway. With the old setup I would scrape my front splitter leaving my driveway. I haven't bottomed out yet (I often go over speed bumps and never a problem) although once in a parking garage in the city I had a hard time getting out (711 3rd Ave if you want to check out). The driveway was pretty steep getting out. I may of had an issue with the stock setup too.

The Dinan drop is minimal... paired up with a slightly bigger wheel setup and it looks perfect imo. My stock tires were I believe 24.8 and my new tires are 25.5 which has helped with closing the gap and giving me a little more ride height. Some may say the the increase is too much... I honestly do not care it rides great now.

Motorworks West did the work in Wickoff NJ.

Read the thread on the H&R springs it may help with making your decision.

Here's the thread... I'm not hating on H&R (Had them in my Cobra) just passing info along.
