A few notes from the first oil change.

Did the first oil change today at 2,850 miles. Just noting a few things that stood out.
  • Low little SOB wouldn't go up my ramps without scraping, so I had to make a pair of mini-ramps to get it onto the real ramps.
  • Easier to go under this one from the front, as opposed to the side on my 335.
  • There's no door over the oil drain plug, just a hole in the underside covers.
  • The 17mm socket felt a little loose on the nut.
  • As with my 335, the crush washer from the factory looked to be aluminum instead of brass.
  • No little green dot on the edge of the oil filter cap this time.
  • The Mann filter I bought from ECS Tuning was made in Mexico instead of Germany.
  • BMW is selling the oil in liters now. Seriously?
  • The shape of the new oil bottle makes it a bit harder to pour without some spillage.
  • 5.75 liters out, 6 liters in.

We'll see where it goes from here.

Weird. There is a little plastic door on the '14

Yeah, that looks the same as it did on my 335.

My 2015 doesn't have it, though. No little tabs around the edges to mount the door, no hole on one end to place the half-turn washer that keeps it closed. Just a square hole with rounded corners.

Perhaps part of the changes that included the headunit switchover? When was yours built?

Mine was built in April, 2015. Has the 4G headunit, orange A/C display at night, et al. There were obviously some changes made this spring, but why would they change the little door over the drain plug?

Sure the right amount of fluid came out, it sure as hell wasn't ATF (besides, that needs a nutdriver to remove, not a 17mm socket), and there's nothing else that holds that much oil in the car. Still, now I'm going to be paranoid until I can look under the car one more time tomorrow morning.

I would think if you had changed the ATF instead, 14L in the engine would overflow....

Well, more to the point, if I couldn't tell ATF from oil, I'd have bigger problems.

But, yeah, had I dumped the transmission fluid, then in addition to likely failure of the transmission to engage with only 2 of the 8 quarts it wanted to have in it, the engine would likely have had kittens when I started it with twice the oil, even if it hadn't been pouring out the top valve cover in the first place.

And, besides, the oil drain is the only thing I know of down there using a 17mm hex nut with a crush washer.

The beauty of everybody carrying a flat HD movie camera in their pockets. You can stick it on a yardstick and go slide it around to get a shot.

Two views, showing the oval hole in the cover, the drain bolt, and the oil level sensor next to the bolt. And anyone with a pressing need to see the whole slide-around can see it here:

Was the oil dirty that you took out? Any metal shavings, etc.?

It was darker than new, but not black. No visible shavings or grit, and the filter looked decent as well.

When I changed mine and examined the filter, there were lots of little metal shavings and pieces of blue sealant.

Any reason why you didn't buy the original BMW filter from ECS instead?

I thought I did. Ordered the same setup I always have - 7 quarts and a filter. It's always been a German filter until this time. That's why they got the thumbs down.
