Brake dust on wheels

Have I lost my mind? I just washed my 228i M Sport for the first time (I only hand wash it). After 2 weeks and 800 miles there was absolutely no black on the wheels. This is my 4th BMW and all the others would have looked awful by now. Are the pads that different? Or do they just need to be broken in more?

My M235 has the dustiest brake pads I've ever encountered. It amazes (and frustrates) me that they're this dusty.

I did buy some wheel wax from the dealer for my X3. It does not prevent the buildup but it does come off much more easily. You only need to apply it maybe twice a year and I drive 30k a year.

I believe they made low dust pads either standard or an option going forward after 2015. I could be mistaken though.

I don't think the 228 has the same brakes as the M235

That's BMW for you. For performance brakes, you'll get 'performance' dust. We just learn to live with it

Yep! It means we have good brakes

The orbit grey wheels do an excellent job of hiding it too (which was BMW's intentions).

You must have the new low dust pads. My 2014 M Sport 228 has TONS of dust.

HAHA You made me spill my morning coffee . That was funny.

Yes the amount of build up of brake dust is huge with the M235i never seen this much before. On any car i have driven. I guess you have to learn to live with it.

2014 228 Msport here. Absolutely worst car ever for brake dust. 10 times worse than my 128

If you don't have the blue MSport calipers, I believe Akebono makes EUR Series low dust pads for the 228i. Those of us with blue calipers have to wait a bit more. Excellent brake pads!

I had sports brakes on my WRX and the dust was nothing compared to the M235i...

I need to buy a sponge dedicated to my wheels everytime I wash my car. xD

If you have the 228 without the track package you don't have the Msport calipers with the more aggressive pads.

The lower end pads do not dust as much, the M sport ones like crazy. Black wheels FTW.
