Drivetrain Malfunction - Drive Moderately

2015 Bmw M4. Owned the car for 6 months with only 6k miles. I drove the shit out of the car during the morning and went to fill my tank. Then i went to a friend's place for lunch. When i left my friends place and started my car, a "Drivetrain malfunction" warning appeared and the engine hesitated and turned off. I tried 2 more times but the same result happened. I ended up calling Roadside assistance to take my car to the dealer and asked my friend for a ride home.

I called the service rep handling my car and told him what happened. He said it might be bad gas and if so, i would have to pay the cost to clean out the fuel and replace it. Luckily the dealer just called and said it was a bad Fuel Pump and that all parts and labor will be covered by warranty. Thank god. The car will supposedly be finished by tomorrow. I will keep you guys posted.

Car is stock with No Mods.

Dealer (Freeport BMW) returned the car after 4 days. They initially ordered the wrong part which added an extra day of waiting. Car is running fine now. They reset all my programming so i need to program it again.

I was going to ask DCT or 6MT but in this case I don't think that matters.

I got the same warning a while back, but the car started no problem and allowed me to go into sport+ mode. The engine light stayed on the dash, it would not turn off no matter what. My problem was the gas cap was not put on correctly after getting gas. I fill up at the same station in NJ all the time, apparently the gas attendant didn't put it back on correctly. Always check the gas cap after filling up.

I'm certainly not trying to take this thread "there" but are there performance mods on the car?

Hmm, bad gas. If I remember correctly that was a common phrase used when the N54 HPFP issues started. Not to take the thread there also, but anyone else have fuel pump issue. I just started having long starts which was the pre condition of the N54 failures. Please not again.

What's the mileage on the M3? And is it consistent long starts? perhaps due to the weather?

I've noticed very slightly longer cranks recently as well. Hope it's just this weird humid weather

My M3 has 3k miles. The long starts are only when first starting. Not after warm up. Also the weather is hot, but this has never bothered any other car I've owned. I'm not going to freak unless I start hearing a rash of HPFP failures. If BMW has this issue again, that may do it for me. I dealt with it on my 535, it was a nightmare.

"Bad gas" is the exact same line I got for my N54 HPFP issues. 3 computer flashes, swapped injectors and a fuel pump later it was fixed, never a case of "bad gas".

Most states in the U.S. you fill up your own tanks....so a non issue

Had a similar issue in my M6. Just filled up the car for a drive to Chicago. Got the "Drivetrain Malfunction" warning just after pulling out of the gas station. Car went into a low power limp mode. Drove directly to the dealer (5 miles) instead of departing on my road trip. Pulled into the service bay still running in limp mode. (I didn't want to take the chance of trying a restart until I got to the dealer). Shut the car off and restarted it and everything appeared to be back to normal. Dealer spent an hour or so going over the car. Got the "Bad Gas" assumption. Problem never re-appeared. Didn't even drain/refill the tank.

One note I did make. The car was effectively in storage for a month or so before I pulled it out of a heated garage and into the relatively cold Wisconsin weather. Then went right to the gas station to fill up. Not sure if the storage/temps had anything to do with it (condensation, etc).

The dealers / service people really need to STFU about bad gas. It's such a lame excuse. Bad gas only really happens if you buy from a shitty station that has a very low turnover rate on their gas. Then you run the risk of buying gas that is contaminated with either debris or God for bid water. Otherwise bad gas never ever happens.

The likelihood of BMW owners with M cars taking their cards to places like that is pretty slim. They really just need to stop this nonsense of "bad gas".

Just had the same message on my 2015 M3. Drivetrain malfunction - drive moderately. And took it to the dealership and they replaced vanos solenoid.
