Running in

What's peoples way of running the M5 in?

I've read debates for most other cars I've looked at over the years and they say drive hard from day one or you'll get a "slow" one. But that is for lower performance cars, I'd imagine this one takes a bit more care ??

I went by the book, took my time and drove normally. Any chance I could to do a longer trip I would load the miles on.

I remember a car I had years ago and was to run it in short journeys so more revs and gears were used as allowed to 4x300 mile journeys where the car is ticking over 90% of the time....

Also don't go above 106mph??

from what i read, and what i intend to follow, is first 40-50 miles vary revs and do engine braking. this helps bed the pistons in. from that point then follow the manual.

For me, I waited for the engine to get some temperature on the gauge and then drove it as I normally would.

I picked mine up in December though so not the best time of year to try to put too much power down.

I think as long as you try not to keep the revs constant for too long and try to avoid the red line you'll be fine.

Drive it and enjoy it

Thanks, so there's no physical limit on revs or speed set before running in. Read a debate that the power is dulled down until the running in service is completed... Can't see that?!

look at previous threads! there is RPM and MPH restriction. 5.5k and 114mph of the top of my head, but check.

Nothing is physically limited, it's more the manual telling you what it recommends you to do. I may have given it a bit more than the stated parameters once or twice

The running in service is just a change of fluids as far as I was told. Nothing is switched to turn on more power but the drive home should be via the scenic route just to make sure
