BMW M Performance exhaust system Active Sound for diesel models
BIMMERPOST NEWS BMW M Performance exhaust system Active Sound for diesel models BMW Press Release August 27, 2015. In terms of power and performance, modern BMW diesel engines are on par with the brand’s petrol engines – only with regard to the desired sound are there any noticeable differences. In order to compensate for this acoustic difference, BMW is now offering the BMW M Performance exhaust system Active Sound. This new complete system comprising exhaust, sound system and control unit was developed exclusively for diesel-powered vehicles of the current BMW 2 Series, 3 Series and 4 Series and is perfectly attuned to the basic acoustics of each engine. The sound can be individually controlled via the Driving Experience Control function: In the ECO PRO and COMFORT modes, the system produces a clear, transparent sound that is suitable for long distances, is always convincing in day-to-day traffic and underscores the car’s dynamic appearance. In the SPORT or SPORT+ mode, the Active Sound System unfolds its entire acoustic spectrum, ensuring maximum emotionalism. Therefore, BMW offers drivers with sporting ambitions in particular the opportunity to further individualise the engine sound and their vehicle as a whole. In addition to the sporty acoustics, the look of the new sports exhaust system is also striking, as the dual exhaust with chrome BMW M Performance tailpipe trims blends in perfectly with the vehicle’s design. In conjunction with the BMW M Performance exhaust system Active Sound, vehicles with 18d engines and all 20ds produced before July 2015 are fitted with an additional tailpipe. The more powerful engines are visually enhanced by a larger tailpipe diameter. The system, which was developed by BMW, is produced in Germany and fulfils the brand’s high quality standards with regard to the choice of materials, design and craftsmanship. Additional approval or entries are not required. The BMW M Performance exhaust system Active Sound is available for the following vehicles and engines:
Market launch of the BMW M Performance exhaust system Active Sound for the above mentioned models will be carried out successively from September 2015 to March 2016. |

I've been reading up on a few of these and whereas before I was interested, I now think they sound rather crappy. The noise is very fake and really doesn't fit with the car.
I'm glad I just went for the twin pipe exit. Much more discrete and much better on the car I have. |

I'm still breaking the car in (1200 KM's atm) but I like the ActiveSound, in comfort (or eco) it's silent, in sport or sport+ it has a sporty sound. Some burbles when you downshift, reverse or shut the engine down. I haven't really floored the pedal (breaking car in) so I don't really know what it sounds like if I floor the car and go into higher revs (I would imagine it would be even louder). It's only exterior sound though, the interior sound seems to be a separate thing according to the model you have. I've got 420D, no interior sound is spawned from my hifi system by default. I might check the coding to see if I would like to have interior sound active also. With the windows closed, in lower revs, you hardly notice the exterior ActiveSound (some will like this, others won't). With the windows (or a window) open you hear it clearly. The sound also seems to match what I've seen / found on YouTube |

I forgot a small detail, I looked at the car sitting on the parking lot when I was at McDonalds and the exhaust line (the bowl there) is visible from a distance when the car is parked, looked nice (bulky) so I liked that as well and I didn't expect or even think about that

Another update, driving around with it for two weeks now (> 2000 km's now)
It seems like the sound is more present now in Sport mode, you can hear it inside the car (still dampened though) as well to some extent but it doesn't get annoying. With window down (partially is sufficient) you hear it distinctively (liking it very much). According to friends / family that have seen me pass by, the ones that are car lovers tell me it sounds amazing |

A video would be excellent if possible. I am considering this, but I am having an issue in AUS as I have a feeling the exhaust may not currently pass our emission requirements. BMW are looking into it for me.
