Quick brake pad question
Hey guys, my vehicle has been sitting for a while. I am changing the pads for rest of the season and then parking the car for the winter.
Anyway, no warning lights on the I drive to replace them yet, but I do feel like it needs at least pads for now. When I change them should I replace the sensors with new ones(have them) or don't bother, just keep the old sensors on as the new ones will have to be programmed. thanks for the input! |

From what I was told from the shop if you replace pads before sensor wear bar(cause of brake light on cluster) you do not need to replace the sensor. Once the sensor is triggered, it's not longer good which require replacing. No special programming is required if you have to replace sensor from what I recall doing this few years ago. Plug and play and light should go off.

According to a Bentley's article on the E60, the only way to know for sure is to measure the resistance across the contacts at the harness end of the sensor. If it reads over 470 ohms then it needs to be replaced before you can reset the CBS service intervals. https://wiki.bentleypublishers.com/d...W+5+Series+E60

here is my dilemma though. Rear service indicator says 4000 miles left on pads. So now I am thinking maybe I ll install the new sensors with the pads as well since I have them. My question is will I be able to reset the service life after I plug the new sensors in through the cluster and not get any warning lights.
thanks guys for the help |

Case and point, when I swapped to my track pads I ziptied the sensor up and out of the way (not anywhere near contacting anything). Let's just say after that weekend, my brake service indicator read several tens of thousands of miles less. But it's just an estimate based on my aggressive driving that weekend. If you are physically inspecting the brakes and the sensor isn't worn, I wouldn't worry. Just reset the service interval (or ignore it all together). My way of thinking is the sensor is a fallback idiot light in case you don't see the pads getting worn down. Please anyone correct me if I'm wrong... |
