Cobb tuning in Canberra?

hi all

Does anyone someone who can do Cobb tuning for N54s in Canberra, ACT?
Or, failing that, in Sydney?

Not meaning to open a can of worms, but is it really worth doing if my car is completely stock otherwise? Is it a noticeable gain?

cheers

Hey Satz, do you mean pro tune? That would be a 'no' but this can be done remotely if you decided to do that. I assume you know that loading of the off-the-shelf maps are a DIY.

Worth doing? Hell, yeah - even the Stage 1 if stock only!!!

Edit: FWIW, mine gained 35kW atw wheels just with the Cobb Stage 1 and totally stock hardware.

Hi jjh

I must be confused. I see in your sig that you have Cobb ap and pro tune?

Do I need both to get the power increase? I'd love the extra 35kws!!!

My car feels too slow.. . .

Did you get it done in Canberra?

Cheers

Satz.

I am assuming you are going with the Cobb - so to summarise the results in my experience:
  • Stock = 185kW (atw)
  • Cobb Stg 1 Aggressive (no other mods) = 220kW
  • Cobb Stg 1 Aggressive (upgraded IC, Catless DPs, upgraded charge pipe/DVs) = 240kW
  • Cobb Stg 2 Aggressive (upgrades as above) = 261kW

At this point, the above tunes were flashed by me, in my garage at home to give me those results. I then arranged for a protune by PTF (online) where they worked to optimise the last tune mentioned > http://www.protuningfreaks.com/products/protune-bmw. Unfortunately I have not had the car on the dyno since but I can tell you that power, torque, driveability, smoothness and even fuel consumption has been improved further. You don’t have to do the protune but it is worthwhile.

You need to read the info on the maps on the Cobb website > http://www.cobbtuning.com/maps/. In particular the notes.

The transformation, even before the protune, was massive. Lots of guys on here have gone even further with upgraded low pressure fuel pumps and E85 blended fuel for more power. Up to you if you want to go down that path.

HI JJH

to do the Cobb flash tune, would I need to buy the Cobb AccessPort? And then download tunes through the net?

cheers

Yes, and the tunes will be pre-loaded on the AP.

Do you know if you can use someone else's AP and pay for new tunes? And of course, pay something to the person for the use of their AP?

LOL - sorry to say they are onto people thinking that. Each AP unit is "locked" into only one car at a time. If you don't want to buy new, wait for one to come up in the classifieds.

cheers JJH. Might explore the MHD option that uses an Android device...

But good to hear from a 'local' that you did feel a difference changing the engine tune. Did you have to replace any parts because of the stress of the tuning?

You might want to also consider MHD instead of Cobb (EDIT: beat me to it haha). Its is actively being developed (Cobb isnt developing on this platform anymore) and already has a few features not in COBB. You can flash off the shelf tunes or get your car custom tuned with MHD as well. Its is also cheaper.

I'd also probably go for an OTS until you get intercooler, downpipes and maintenance done. Should get walnut blast and new plugs, no point in fine tuning a car with caked up valves.

In general, most would agree that once you start tuning, plugs and maybe coils should be replaced. On a higher kms car, a valve clean is also a good idea as vtl suggested. Like a few others on here, I did all the above as part of the tuning process to make sure I did not run into problems and to get the best out of the tune.

JJH, did you get the valve cleaning done in Canberra?

Rolfe don't do the Walnut blasting, but Costello said they can.

I am from Canberra and Advan(Peter) is just about to do the walnut blasting and few other things on my car today. I would recommend to go to Advan.

Thanks Msport. Is 'Advan' the business name? I can't find them on the web...at least not in Canberra.

The only one I can find is in Auburn, Sydney.

cheers

Sorry for slow response!!

Costello has a genuine BMW walnut blaster and can do it if you want to have it done locally. For the same cost as Advan - save you the drive if that is all you need.
