Best Exhaust for N55 335i
Hello all,
I have had my 2011 335i M-sport for a little while now and have been considering upgrading the exhaust (rear muffler) to something a little louder. I have a JB4 install, drop-in air filter and BMS charge pipe. I already have the muffler flap open all the time via the JB4. I ready like the sound of the BMW OE performance exhaust, but alas BMW Australia don't sell them here. It would have to be sourced from the US and given our exchange rate at the moment, it amounts to about AUD$2,300 delivered ... pretty steep IMO. So my question is, what is everyone using on their 335i's for an exhaust upgrade? Do you have any videos of the sound? And roughly how much did you pay for it? Any assistance would be great. Cheers Rhys |

If you havent already get a downpipe, this changes the note a lot.
On the N55 with a PE it will be loud in conjunction with a DP! The catless DP may be enough for you in terms of acoustics and will provide a healthy power gain. |

I'm also interested to know.
In addition to a catless DP, what's a good muffler or cat back system that isn't too expensive. Also any that are proper quad tips? Most I see seem to be dual. Are there any retailers that sell the Performace Exhaust? |

He said $2,300 was steep for the BMW PE, the iPE is 5k+

Because it's over $1000AUD you add on the approx $50 import tax Basically $1900 AUD at your door. Something to consider. There are also a lot of other exhausts on that site for our car. See here |

Yeah I had read and heard great things about going catless DP but didn't know whether I could go that route in Oz. Is there a secondary cat in the system to maintain legality?
And thanks for the other posts. I hadn't seen that site when I was looking around so that brings the price down a bit. Please keep the suggestions coming. Cheers. Last edited by Rhylea; 10-08-2015 at 07:09 AM.. |

However the chances of getting pulled over and defected by the po-po are extremely low in this car (as long as you lay off the external rice mods) Compared to a cop magnet like a skyline. Unless you feel bad about the trees or something, then in that case you should be driving a prius or Nissan leaf instead... |

The only reason why i'd avoid catless is the smell. I was catless in my skyline for a few years and driving the car into a garage and parking it there was a smelly experience. Also windows down and at a traffic lights with winds blowing from the rear, you'll smell it really strongly too.

With catless DP's I noticed no weird smell, just a tad more turbo noise and the odd occasion on startup it spits black soot on my garage floor on startup... (I still have secondary cats in though) |

+1 - with your secondary cats in place, catless DPs do not produce any noticeable smell. I also had that concern before doing mine but I need not have worried at all. Turbo spool sound and a slightly louder exhaust sound; plus more power potential makes catless DPs very worthwhile!

Just getting back to the original question -replacement exhaust.
I have the BMW PE on a 335i convertible N55. The only other mod which I have which effects sound is the BMW M performance power kit. The PE is fantastic, but surprisingly loud -especially with the roof down -under acceleration. The enormous positive is that on constant throttle settings its no louder than the original exhaust. This is the first modified exhaust that I have ever had which managed this tricky feat. I picked mine up second hand from this site -you see PE's pop up for sale semi regularly. Either way, I highly recommend the BMW PE. |
