N51 Cylinder 2 Misfire

Car was running great on Tuesday. Filled it up on the way home and drove the other car the next day. Went to start it this morning and it had a rough idle followed by a check engine light / service engine soon message. Ran the OBDII codes and saw cylinder 2 misfire. I shut it off and took the other car.

Any ideas where to start? Could it be bad gas ? Plugs, coils or worse? I've never had to deal with something like this before so any ideas would be great.

Thanks

most likely a coil. possibly a spark plug, but it's usually the coils that go first. It's not unheard of one to fail at your mileage.

Can i replace just one to get me through the weekend and then swap the rest of them out? My understanding is that the cylinder count starts from the front of the car to the back. Am I correct?

Yes, cylinder 1 is in the front. You can replace just one if you want, 67k would be a little early for me to consider doing all 6. For reference I just did all 6 at 120k after having a bunch of little misfires. Plugs are probably due soon, too so that's a consideration.

When is the recommended change interval for spark plugs and ignition coils? I've never had to do it to any of my cars (Non BM) before, but it seems like a common problem. I thought it was 100k but I've been reading it should of been done around 60k.

Thanks

I think it's 45 k on the 335 and 100k for the 328 for spark plugs. Coils should probably be changed when you start experiencing misfires and the plugs are good.

If you have a misfire on cylinder 2, to double check that it is the coil, swap the coil with cylinder 3 or 4 and see if it follows. Not sure about the N51, but the N52 needs new spark plugs every 100k km.

Take that shit to the dealer. You have a SULEV and chances are that your state's emissions standards will see to it that BMW services it under their SULEV warranty.

I was looking into that and I saw that it was for 15 years or 150,000 miles and that it covers all the emissions components but the gray area is that it's only if the car is registered in a SULEV state. I got the car from NY but I live in and it's registered North Carolina. I am not the original owner.I'm not sure if a dealer here will honor the warranty or if they even have to.

Anyway I did grab a coil pack and drop it into cylinder 2 and it fired up and cleared the code immediately. Drove it around all weekend and I even got another 2mpg out of the deal.

I'm going to call a dealer and see if they know anything about the SULEV warranty just incase some other part of it goes. What I've read is some people change all the coils if one goes bad or they change one at a time. I'm still planning on changing the plugs at least.

Thank you all for your help.
