Maxxis rc 1 review

I took the plunge on some maxxis rubber, not many reviews so I figured I would try them out. I am running 8.5 square setup.

I ran there 235 40 width, irregardless of what the web says these are about the same dimensions all around as a hanook r2 245 40 mounted.

Tires were about 850 delivered and also includes a $50 nasa track day credit and a insulated coffee mug.

Tires:

I am very impressed with these tires so far, I did 300 track miles on them last weekend over 3 days. I only rotated them left to right once. For me, 4 track days (not events, days) is the best I can get out of tires. I usually run open lapping so that is about 800-1000 or so miles.

They are good out of the box, require no heat cycling. Lap times for me are about 2 seconds faster than hanooks or durrizas on 1.22 course. I suspect I can shave another second or two once I readjust suspension.

The tires have so much grip the car was actually back to understeering. Kind of hard to detect at first as the grip levels were great. I would say the grip is maybe at best 10% off a Hoosier r7.

I will keep an eye on if they heat cycle out, should be at sebring and then back to roebling in Dec. From the looks of it, I would say I will get at least 6 days maybe more with flipping them on the rim if they do not heat cycle out.

My guess is these fall a step above nt01 for grip, just below a full slick. Slip angles are less than a nt01, and much less than slick, which better suits my driving style. Prob optimum around 4-6 deg.

Thanks,

not making it to sebring, but will be at rrr for another test day in Nov. Better track for a baseline for me anyway as it is where I have the most seat time. I was down to high 121, 122 there, expect I could get a high 19 on a "hero lap" to put that into perspective pro drivers there in stock 991 gt3 is a low 18. Ill take the 2 seconds and 100k in my pocket.

Great review. Do you lug around spare wheels with track tires? If so, how do they fit inside this car?

Yes, you can fit 4 tires in the backseat. Track days are hilarious because I show up unload the tires, Jack tools ext from the trunk, swap wheels, install my harness and I'm off eating trailered track only cars. Nothing is more perturbing to those people than getting passed by a "Liscence Plate" car.

About 500 track miles on tires, just flipped them, should be good for 300 or 400 more. No signs of drying out. Tires seem to like 36-38 hot max. Nice graining on the tires.

Will prob switch to a 17" wheel setup, do not like the way the additional height feels on the car w 40 profile. These would last an eternity for the mid level driver or if your not pushing it too hard.

I have gotten consistent 1.3 g ratings on these around the limit. They do give some muted audible noise, but like slicks when there gone, well you just have to wait for them to hook up again. So can't recommend for novice beginners, the limit is pretty high.
