Aluminium welding for oil filter housing

So snapped the bolt hole on my oil filter housing. Anyone have experience in aluminium welding?

Went to a well respected motor mechanic and he advised me to just get another housing.

What do u guys think? In for diy.

I'm with him, replace. Unless the small savings and down time is really worth it that much for you.

For me personally whatever gets me back on the road is the route I take.

I am actually not 100% sure if this is the correct part. It does list n54 engine in the casting though. The correct part number is 11427548032 and every time I see a picture on google it has the identical markings to the one below. If you just check the back of your oil filter housing and check that the numbers are the same then you should be good to go.

Well the one he has pictured is for an oil cooler set up, good time to upgrade if it's like my n54 and doesn't have one. Then again, no idea what car engine its for

The previous ebay item I linked is for an oil cooler. Apparently all Aus 335is came with oil coolers (hot climate option standard)

Confirmed here, this is another listing with identical markings that has better pictures:

Can see it has the oil cooler fittings.

The annoying thing is that a lot of times the part numbers are often abbreviated on the casting.

Yeah BMW uses the last 7 of the part # for most identifications. It's how their parts catalog works.

But should be a huge range that they fit.

Again I'd replace

Welding aluminium is very hard and a highly specialised skill. You will have trouble finding TIG welders that can weld aluminium.

It's probably cheaper, safer and stronger that you buy a new housing.

apparently the material is porous and welding would bring out the grease and the heat could potentially warp the housing. this is what he told me.

happy if someone could help out with the welding.

I just looked at the back of my oil filter housing, has the same numbers as the first ebay link for $80 with local free shipping. Surely its a no brainer at that price?! Just replace it mate

How did you break it!?!

Use common sense, just replace it!! A new housing will be better than a dodgy welded up component..

I'm jumping on the "do it once, do it right" bandwagon. Replace it.

If it does break again due to bad welding OR for whatever reason the filter housing cracks due to hairline fractures from the bad weld, you lose oil, your engine starves, and you need a new engine. All because you decide to cheap it. Worst case scenario which most likely won't happen, but there still is a chance it may.
