ABS error

Driving alone minding my own business and SPCGRY decides to chuck a Friday hissy fit.. ABS, flat tyre sensor and traction control system failures. Yellow lights all over the dash and warnings on the d CTC telling me to drive moderately..... WTF??? loose sensor? electrical issue? anyone know what might be going on here??? Battery is brand new, replaced less than 6 months ago so should not be anything to do with failing battery. Ran diagnostic with the mighty BMWhat app but nothing showed up
Help me out fellas

Did it return after a power cycle?

Car cranks fine afterwards? (ie not the alternator faulty and not charging)

Could be steering wheel sensor, wheel speed sensor, bad DSC (the abs module) unit.

If you bring it in I can run INPA diagnostics which allows you to read all the wheel speed data and a whole load of other stuff

335i gremlins again!

So the errors don't go away by turning it off and on again?

Turns out it is a faulty ABS rear wheel speed sensor
When the system gets a dodgy signal from any of the speed sensors it throws up these alarms.. $39 fix including postage

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/BMW-ABS-W...EAAOSwqv9V5~Ni

Once again thanks to Vince for figuring out the problem with his magic laptop

No worries, glad you weren't out for a new DSC pump!

Heres the google translated error for those interested:

Most likely the sensor is intermittently not sending pulses. Hopefully a new sensor fixes it.

The error light is latched on after the fault so you'll have to clear the code in the DSC module after you replace the sensor.

Those are DSC pump motor related errors. You could confirm by testing the pump via INPA and an eBay cable. Most likely a faulty pump or a connection to the pump has broken. Just buy a 2nd hand DSC pump off ebay. Be very careful when buying the units as there are many different versions. If you buy a complete pump + electronics you'll need to get it coded as well.

This is the sort of thing you are after, although this may or may not be compatible.
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/BMW-E90-E...AxB06OJNNtAFhA

You'll definitely want INPA to actuate the pump and run through the bleeding procedure to get the air out of the new pump.

Those codes are related to a fault ABS pump and or module.

Bmw quotes $4K for a brand new one , so I never bothered getting mine done, but over the year it seem to have (mostly) fixed itself. Used to stay on random, but now only rarely do the error pop up on the dash and will disappear if I turn off and restart the car.

What year is your car? 07 models were the most effected from my research, main cause was the bushings inside the motor getting stuck as they age.

The DSC pump cost an arm and a leg for the E9X/E8X cars, yeah? I heard it's like $5,000 or something.

Can driving the car in a certain manner increase or reduce their chances of failure?

Glad you got your car sorted socket

Just buy a 2nd hand or reconditioned unit. Shouldn't cost anywhere near that much. The main thing is that you need someone competent enough to remove/install the unit, code the unit with NCSExpert/ISTA and run the auto calibration with INPA/ISTA-P

Yeah, they are mega expensive brand new as there's no aftermarket alternative, only OEM. I was quoted $4k just for the unit by an indie shop while it's about $3-3.5k shipped over from either the US or UK.

Aparently they can be rebuilt but no one in WA is able to do it AFAIK

I doubt driving the car in any manner have much (if any) relation to it's failure, seems like another more prone-problem with the early batches of 335i(s) (seem to mainly effect 07 models), issue from my reading centers around the bushes within the pump wearing out and getting stuck over time.

Also there are like 3 or 4 different versions of the ABS control module (for different year cars), so somethings were changed and probably explain why I only seem to read about failures of the unit with regards to early 07 models.

Or just ignore it and drive on, your brakes still works fine, just no ABS (or traction control), but who cares

My Skyline didn't even come with any driver aids rubbish.

Been looking at pumps and control modules, they are around $300.

What's the $3000 part?

looks like abs error is becoming more popular. on a plus side i dont need to disable traction control every morning

funny enough, if i get a screwdriver and hit the abs module/dc motor a couple times it clears for a day or two.

Wheel sensor problem fixed

For regular forum readers, I had a problem with the rear passenger wheel sensor not picking up a signal. Because the car can't read the speed at which all four wheels are rotating it chucks a hissy and faults everything out

The result was ABS, traction control, cruise control etc were all disabled and mess load of error lights, flat tyre faults etc lit up the dash when every time I started the car.

Also meant that the car was in YOYO all the time. With the new RBs there were a few hairy moments where the car lost traction under acceleration

Brought a new wheel sensor off Ebay ($35) but that didn't work. So took it into the boys at Active who diagnosed as faulty hub. Jin ordered in a new hub and installed it with the help of a mallet (pictured). Took 6 hrs but the fault is fixed and all is good. Thanks again to the team at Active !!!
