no text message sound on phone while hooked to bluetooth

I bought a USB dongle as soon as I bought the car so I could stream music from my iphone 5S through the AUX on the Idrive. I hate that I cant listen to the radio and have the GPS give audio directions through the speakers at the same time, I like to listen to talk radio (NPR) on long trips. I also havent heard a audible text message alert since I bought the car, and it hooks to Bluetooth as soon as I enter the car. Why is this?

Do you hear the text sounds if you have aux selected?

I have factory CIC and combox with bluetooth steaming as standard and its the same for me if I have bluetooth streaming activated in my CIC settings.

The phone is paired for BT streaming so will direct all sounds to the car despite me having another input selected (CD etc).

My workaround was to deactivate BT streaming and only activate when I need to use it, so I have all my sounds coming through the phone now, but it still works for telephone calls as expected.

This may be the issue you have, but you cant deactivate as easily as me if you use yours for calls etc too...

No, Warrington, Cheshire, UK!

CIC stands for car infotainment computer (idrive)

It was driving me crazy and thought my phone was faulty when I couldn't get any sound of it at all, took a few weeks before the lightbulb moment that it was only going "faulty" when in my car! Turned BT streaming off on the car and hey presto, the sounds came back.

Just annoying having to activate it again when I actually want to BT stream. Wish the phone was clever enough to understand when I select the BT stream source in the car, otherwise dont send sounds to the car when I am not listing to that input.

Just noticed you have idrive, so you will have either CCC or CIC, late 2008 early 2009 is the crossover from CCC to CIC, so you most likely have CCC I think.

This should help identify...

You can indeed and many have done so, there are a lot of threads about explaining everything in great detail.

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=896119 is one for example. Many DIYs exist also showing step by step how to physically remove the CCC and install the CIC.

If you fit the CIC I would seriously consider the combox too for a lot of additional functionality (handles bluetooth streaming, iphone on usb with album art etc). Search for combox retrofit on here and Google and you will be inundated with threads.
