Speed Limit & Road Sign information

I ordered my X1 X Line with the Navigation Plus option at the end of October.
The test car I drove had Heads up Display which also showed speed limit & traffic sign info. Stupidly, it has just occurred to me that the test car must have had the Driver Assistant 5AS package as well ......doh!
Have I got this right?
I will ring the dealer tomorrow but does any one know if I am likely to be too late to add the 5AS option?
The car was ordered on the 30th October with est. delivery on 10th Dec.
I haven't had a VIN no. or spoken to the dealer since I ordered it but I assume they must have some official cut off date?
Any info greatly appreciated.

Without the "5AS Driver Assistant" what would the "610 Heads up display" show?
- Just the current speed? The Navigation direction too?

I ordered the 5AS but didn't though it would affect the Heads up display too

Don't be too disappointed. When Andrew English, possibly the best motoring journalist in the UK, drove the car, he wrote: "the speed-limit sign recognition failed to note so many limit changes it was effectively useless." My test drive confirmed that.

By the way, 'heads up' and 'head-up' have quite different meanings in English. This is a head-up display.

As per my local dealer to get the Speed limit info in head-up display, you need to add 'driver assistance plus' package.

Just been playing with the loan car we have and that has the speed limit display, no head up display but it shows on the trip computer in the dash. This car just has the driver assistance pack.

Thanks for all the replies. I'll give the dealer a ring tomorrow. If it's not too late I will probably go for the basic DA package as long as it does includes speed limits and road signs. If they say I need the DA+ package then I don't think it will be worth the extra £££'s.

It's part of Driving Assistant pack. I have it and it works flawlessly, day, night, big city, small town, motorway, dirty sign, clean, it even picks up variable speed signs on the motorway including temporary amber LED speed signs. Have not had a single problem with.

You do NOT need Driving Assistant PLUS for speed limit info. The only difference between DA and DA Plus is the addition of adaptive cruise control.

If you can still amend your order, go for it. DA is definitely worth it.

That's one of my biggest pet peeves. IMHO it's only a "heads up display" if you have more than one head.

It also comes, at least in France, with traffic jam assistant.

To be honest, I always considered that as part of the new advanced cruise controls. They don't just slow down/speed up. They can actually stop/start in traffic.

Decision made for me by the dealer........it's too late to make any changes!
On the plus side I guess I'm £500 better off, still, it would have been nice.

On a different matter does anyone know about Park Assist? I've got the Driver comfort package ZOA which in the brochure and online configurator doesn't mention anything about it. On my sales contract however it shows Park Assist 5DP as one of the items under ZOA.
Obviously not a complaint but just an observation.

Just spent my lunch time playing with specs for our X1 and if you click on the show detail on the on line configurator it does list park assistant as part of the Driver comfort pack.

As far as our spec goes I still can't decide....All I know is Mrs W wants a white one

Just collected my car from the dealer.
Pitch black, pouring with rain and blowing a gale.....not a great first drive home. However, I am pleased to report my Head up Display shows speed limit info even though I don't have any driver assist packages.
Will post some pictures over the next couple of days, weather permitting.

Very interesting. Can you test and see if it's just relaying the Satnav data or if it's actually picking up speed signs via camera. A lot of cars provide satnav speed info. The problem is that sometimes this might be out of date. If it's the camera, it should give you the info immediately after you've passed the speed sign. Within 1~2 seconds.

I guess the easiest way to test is to keep an eye on it next time you're on a motorway with variable speed signs.

I had the same question.
This is the answer I had from Dutch BMW dealer.
It is in Dutch ,but translated as follows.

The BMW X1 is standard equiped with option 5AV - Active Guard. This option consist of Approach Control Warning and Speed Limit Info.

BMW UK does not list Speed Limit Info as part of Active Guard.

Quote:
Active Guard, comprising:
Forward vehicle collision warning with audible and visual warning given to the driver

Over 30mph an urgent warning also activates brake preconditioning
to prepare brakes ahead of driver use

City collision mitigation proactively engages braking for rapid
reaction to potential vehicle collisions

City collision mitigation works at speeds up to 30mph

Quick note from my real first test drive (450km x2 over the extended xmas weekend) to confirm the speed limit assist feature : when using the speed limiter, every time the camera recognizes a speed limit change it asks if driver wants to adjust current limit. Very neat feature :-)

I have DA plus package with road sign recognition and acc

Apologies for resurrecting this old thread but I was on the M25 this morning and my speed limit info was constantly changing in line with the overhead gantry limits. Until today I was under the impression by speed limit info was only taken from the sat nav but this can't be the case. I don't have any of the Driver Assistant packages so am somewhat mystified. My car camera must be reading / recognising the signs. Now all I need to do is find a 'no overtaking' sign and see if this has any reaction?

Good to hear. Maybe their brochure description is outdated.

So is this information being got from traffic information?
