blown turbo or wastegate rattle?
Hi Guys, I know this waste-gate rattle has been discussed a lot around here but the behavior of what I think is a waste-gate issue is completely different from what I read here and see on numerous videos.
Here is what's happening: Yesterday when starting the car in the morning, cold start, I heard the sound you will hear in the video I will post here. After 1 or 2 minutes is goes away but it will appear upon revving the engine a little. As I drive the car and the engine warms up the noise will tend to go away but not 100%, it will end up being very low but I can still notice it when the engine is running at the normal 230/240 F. I have no codes, no boost leak, no limp mode, the runs just like nothing happens. There's no white smoke coming from either the engine bay or the exhaust, no oil leak whatsoever. 2 things to consider and to give context although I don't know if are related. - The day before this started I drove the car on a very very very heavy rain conditions. - About 2 weeks ago I installed a JB+ on the car and that's the ONLY mod it has. Now I parked the car back in the garage waiting for it to cool down so I can remove the JB+ to test it without it. As you will see on the video, the noise/rattle is coming from the turbos side of the engine and looks more like it's from the front one. https://youtu.be/MWffS0ZCta0 Any suggestion will help. I will take the car to the shop later today or when they can look at it. Thanks! |

Sounds like my turbo rattle problem. It was really bad on start up and when revving over 3k.
To test if its your wastegates, disconnect your vaccum hoses its easy to do, rev the car see if it goes away if it does its wastegates, if it doesnt could be something else. |

Make sure that all vacuum lines are in good condition; especially behind the oil filter cap.

Its too hard for me to tell from your video.
Turbos don't blow by the way the seals leak and they get what is know as a lazy turbo. I think you got a great suggestion to disconnect the vacuum lines to see if the waste gates are rattling. By the way all waste gates will eventually rattle some and they can be adjusted but where this turbo and waste gate sit it is very hard to do... |

Ok, I've disconnected the 2 vacuum lines from the canisters and although the noise did not go away 100% it was much lower. I will stop testing myself and take it to the dealership. Will let you know the outcome in a few days.

Curious to see the outcome of this one also. I actually finally got around to doing the vacuum line disconnect from the canister test and my rattle went away completely! It was the most beautiful thing I've ever NOT heard.
So my next step should be to start replacing vacuum lines in hopes that one is leaking? Or does anyone else have another suggestion? |

Sure sounds more the like electric pump for the emissions system going bad rather than the turbos or waste gate. I would suggest assuming the problem is still there to disconnect the connector to that motor for a cold start and see if the noise is gone. Curious what it is as it doesn't sound anything like turbos and waste gate issues...
