OT: Sonos Play 3 or Bose SoundTouch 20 Series iii.

Looking at a bit of a change around.

So while in John Lewis today, was checking out Sonos Play 5 and 3.

Now the 5 is likely too big for general use around rooms.

So will settle for a Play 3.

Then a curve ball.

Bose have revamped their SoundTouch series and the SoundTouch 20 looks pretty decent.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Bose-SoundTo.../dp/B0117RGP58

While both will link up to my NAS and ITunes server, it's other bits like BBC HLS support etc or Apple Music (neither support yet).

Has anyone experience of the NEW Bose SoundTouch Series THREE?

Basically trying to get a comparrison sorted.

Do I go Sonos or jump across to Bose?

I do like the preset buttons on the Bose and a handy little old fashioned remote for volume etc, saves looking for my iPad etc.

Both offer a try it before you buy it service, so may resort to that lol.

I have a Audio Pro, in black leather rather than red, under our TV. It has an optical connection to the TV. The speaker has its own wi-fi, but I use our Virgin Media wi-fi to connect to my NAS for playing music. It supports Airplay as well.

I have a fair bit of experience with Sonos.

What are you trying to achieve? Do you want like a multi room system? Or will it be a stand alone unit? Also what room is it for?

I have 2x Sonos Play:1s, 2x Play:3s, 2x Connects (hooked to my surround sound and garden stereo setups).

Pros:
Simple setup
Ability to use Sonos BOOST - a separate WiFi signal which will not hamper your home network - if needed, or hard wire via Ethernet (all except Play:1s)
Can control from phone/tablet - does not need to be same one - or PC/Mac
Trueplay tuning
Cheaper than BOSE
More online music options than BOSE
DLNA compliant
Handles more music formats than BOSE
Regular firmware/software updates which add more services/functions

Cons:
I personally have none, but you may consider-
No bluetooth capability
No separate remote

I note the BOSE is not DLNA compliant, so it may not read from a NAS - their own literature states "SoundTouch® systems are compatible with select NAS drives"

Neither are directly compatible with Apple Airplay, but the Sonos does have a workaround available

I would go for Sonos every time.

I am trying to compare the two systems.

Sonos Play 3 versus latest iteration of the Bose Sound Touch 20.

For example Sonos have recently cobbled together an update to handle BBC HLS.

The latest Bose now handles flac but has lost AirPlay (I don't use AirPlay so not major impact).

The Bose also allows line in.

You can link Sonos 1's for stero output, but you can't do the same with the Bose 10's.

Not really that interested in other systems, it's enough of a minefield as it is.

Edit: the Bose supports Synolgy NAS, so that's a bonus.

I have various Sonos components, play 1's, 3's and 5's.

It's a cracking system and easy to set up. There are definitely better speakers on the market, but for something to build on, I don't think there's much better.

I'm working towards the sounds bar, base box and 2 X Play '3's for the TV set up

I have a Play 1, Play 3, Playbar and Sub and cannot rate them highly enough. The music quality is great (The play 1 lacks bass but what can you expect from a tiny speaker). I recently was looking at a friends Bose multiroom set up and it wasn't a patch on what Sonos offered - however they have probably updated it with the Series 3. I think Sonos are way ahead on their UI/apps.

Ours is set up with a ReadyNas and i've got iTunes mirrored on the NAS from my Mac so all updated Music goes across. Sonos are also adding Apple Music support so that's a bonus if you use that.

Any ideas on when Apple Music will come?

That is a big one really.

MIT and Apple are having a bit of a hand bags at dawn at the moment.

I have my ITunes on my Synology, it comes with an iTunes server and I replicate from my PC.

I am likely to stick with Sonos, however the new Bose looks good as well.

I'm in the Beta program and I believe it's coming on the 15th Dec to beta users and early next year to end users.

There's also Trueplay now that will adapt the speaker to your room. I've not had chance to test this yet but from what i've heard it's meant to be good.

I have Play One in my study, Play fives in the big kitchen/diner/fireside area, sound bar and sub in my lounge. I am going to add two play ones to the sounder when i get round to it. It can all be synced if need to provide through hues music or individual, the music and film library is on my Synology NAS...it just works.

The sound works really well for me, much more configurable to live with than my ARCam and B & W speakers which I don't use anymore. The user interface from phone iPad or pc is easy to use. My son is waiting for Apple Music to be supported but the Sonos CEO has committed to doing this at some point. I looked at the NAIM system but settled on the Sonos about two years or so ago.

Another Sonus fan with 9 in the house! (1's, 3's and 5's) Quite common to be playing 3 to 4 different sources at one time via Napster controlled via Sonus iphone app. Sorry I cant give any comparisons but unless you are a serious audio geek type I think they sound just fine.

4 zones to our system consisting of playbar and sub in the lounge, play 3 in the bedroom, connect in dinning room and connect amp in the kitchen. I'm also thinking about another play 3 for my office and a pair of play 1s as rear channels for the lounge.

It's a great system and we use the multi room audio facility quite a lot. It's so much nicer to walk around the home with a constant volume rather than it all blasting from a single room.

I like Bose stuff but I don't think Sonos can be beaten on functionality! You can also trust that sonos won't just update their product lines every year making your current stuff outdated and ultimately worth less if/when you want to change!

Another vote for sonos from me. I was an early adopter and have had a system since 2005. Now have playbar, play 5 and 3 zp120s (connect amps) throughout the house.

Others have given the positives which I totally agree with. I also love the way you can stream soundcloud and mixcloud (I use for rare soul and Motown and various DJ mixes)

New Sonos 5 is worth a look. We have a couple of 1's & a 3 & are more than happy with them. Will be looking to add to them in the near future, just waiting to see it Apple play will come on board.

I recently bought Sonos and really recommend - Play 5 for the kitchen/breakfast area, 3 for a bedroom and 1 for the office. I also have Cyrus hifi which wanted to keep so went for the Sonos bridge to make it compatible and use a Innuos Zen music server to rip all my CD's at lossless - well worth it in my view.

Sonos gets good reviews on what hifi, they also recommend Bluesound multi-room though it's a lot more money than Sonos.

Sonos is more than just the hardware, it's strengths lie in how it all 'just works' with incredible ease.

Trueplay works well - a user-simplified method of wandering about with a sound meter.
Most of my rooms it made no changes, but in the "awkward" rooms - odd shapes, some solid & some partition walls, mix of furnishings (hard/soft) it made adjustments and the sound definitely improved.
Obvious limitation is the quality of the mic in the ipad/phone used to measure the sound.

I read what hifi regularly and don't remember seeing BOSE winning any awards, may be harsh but feels like style over substance to me

I'm very happy with my Sonos kit too (2x Play 1, 2x Play 3, 1x Play 5, a Playbar + Sub and a new Play 5 on order). They work really well but do sound much better when linked as a stereo pair. I think the two Play 1's in my bedroom sound better than a stand alone Play 3.
