Paddle shift steering wheel 330i functionality

HI Guys,

I couldnt decide where to post my question so I add it here, sorry if not the right place.

My question is the following :

I have ordered M steering wheel with Paddle Shifters, currently I have M steering wheel without them.

Friend of mine has 335iA with paddles and when he is on Drive mode he can use the manual shifters on the wheel and if they are not used to change gear it goes back to D mode.
His 335i is 2006 model like mine 330i ,i think they use the same gearbox "GA6HP19Z " at least in bmwfans its the same model but what is their difference ?

Also is it possible if i retrofit paddleshifts to use them in D mode or no way on may car?Any retrofit or anyone who has tried it?

Thanks in advance
