It can, you need to remove the shaft lock and trigger out forwards, then the trim piece slides up.

Do not just try to lever it off as you will break all of the tabs and cry.

2007 BMW 335i  [10.00]
Put a small flat head screw driver under the trigger button, and try to slide it directly forwards out of the shifter handle.

The trigger will slide out the front, and it should have a little pin/shaft that is holding the yellow shifter lever in the handle. Once it's out, you should be able to slide the trim upwards.
