The online portal 'My ConnectedDrive' appears to indicate otherwise.
Here is My ConnectedDrive homepage Then if I click on 'Automatic Map Updates', this is what it tells me - As I've only had this car a few weeks, it hasn't yet updated.

Does it continue for free after the typical 3 year period?
All the other services (e.g. RTTI/remote etc) have to be paid for after 3 years, at something in the region of £120/year. |

In the US, if you have the NBT_EVO system in 2016my+, updates are free for 4 years and automatically update OTA. You must register on BMW Connected, and choose a region on the system in the car. Just look for NBT_EVO on the NAV firmware screen. Some 2016's have it (2,3,4 Series), but some other models are still using the non EVO firmware.
